On August 18, Kan'ei 3 (1626)…
Tokugawa Iemitsu paid an official visit to the Imperial Court and was appointed Junior First Rank and Minister of the Right.
On the same occasion, Tokugawa Hidetada was invited to assume the office of Daijō-daijin (Chancellor of the Realm), but he respectfully declined.
While the Imperial Court demonstrated its high regard for Iemitsu through this distinguished appointment, Hidetada's decision to decline the highest office in the traditional court hierarchy reflected his careful consideration of the relationship between the Tokugawa Shogunate and the Imperial Court.
◆Junior First Rank and Minister of the Right
The rank of Junior First Rank (Juichi-i) and the office of Minister of the Right (Udaijin) together represented one of the highest honors within the Imperial Court's system of court ranks and offices. Iemitsu's appointment was a significant recognition that affirmed his authority as shogun in the eyes of the Imperial Court.
◆Daijō-daijin (Chancellor of the Realm)
The Daijō-daijin was the highest office in the traditional ritsuryō system of government. Although it was a highly prestigious position, Hidetada declined the appointment, demonstrating his intention to place greater importance on his role as shogun.
