don’t know if cortis will continue the cooking series format for their next cb but if they do i hope we get more behind the scenes of them during the song camps and recording process
i want to see this template spammed below every members’ wvs post the same way cfans are able to flood the fan section with nasty comments at every minor inconvenience
Here is a template for anyone to post under the member’s weverse posts or to post as a fan letter. Please feel free to make any changes, and share this with other coers:
Hi [MEMBER’S NAME],
We as a fandom would like to bring something to your attention. For a while now a lot of African American/Black COERS have been uncomfortable with the AAVE (African American Vernacular English) & Black accent (blaccent) you use whenever you speak English. We understand your English has been influenced by social media, pop culture, and by working with African American producers, singers, and songwriters.
This is the following reason why AAVE usage by non-Black people is wrong: Black individuals who speak AAVE are frequently stereotyped, or labeled as "uneducated," "lazy," "ghetto," or "unprofessional". Many are forced to "code-switch" (shift to Standard American English) in academic or corporate environments to avoid discrimination. When non-Black people (like yourself) use AAVE, they are often praised as "trendy," "funny," "cool," or "eloquent" rather than facing the same social or professional penalties. It also strips the dialect of it’s history and context while erasing the Black community that created it.
While you may mean no harm by it, it can come across as condescending, mocking, or disrespectful to Black/African American COERS. We have noticed depending on the situation or audience, your usage of AAVE or putting on a blaccent shifts.
In the future, please be mindful of your usage of AAVE/ blaccent and altogether, you stop using both. We hope our message reaches you and you understand this doesn’t come from a place of hate but rather from a place of openness and vulnerability. We want you to be educated on this matter. We hope we can continue to be open with one another and foster continued closeness as fans and artists. We love you and the other members of CORTIS, please never forget that.
I’m seeing a lot of discourse rn about Martin’s use of aave (something that he’s been doing since their debut). The KOD ad from this summer where he’s speaking in English (heavy aave) is in circulation.
For the past year or so a lot of coers, especially black/african american coers have been trying to hold him accountable for his use of aave but have been met with so much backlash from solo’s and fans who refuse to accept ANY criticism of him. Said fans who have been trying to keep him accountable have been accused of being an anti or set-up.
Now it’s come to a head. I do think he should be held accountable for his language. For those who l think it’s “just words” and not a big deal- you are being dismissive of those who are uncomfortable with his use of language. Martin may be unintentionally using aave (he probably learned his English through social media and interviews of artists he admires and oftentimes aave tends to be prominent in pop culture as black people are the blueprint) BUT you guys need to remember- intent vs. impact. There is no reason a Korean teenager should be talking in aave. We have heard him speak English without aave so it’s possible for him to redact it from his speaking.
Now, I do not agree with people who are saying “he deserves lashings/hate”. Criticism fueled by anger or venomous intent instantly turns into hatred. I do think people leaving thoughtful letters critiquing him on weverse is a methodical, effective way for him to see and understand the message we are trying to put across. As a non-black coer we can stand in solidarity with our black coers by posting messages esp on their behalf. If you are unsure what to say, ask a black coer! they are more than happy to help out and I have seen many circulating a message template for others to use.
Those who are saying we should criticize him bc it’ll give powers to antis and fuel a bigger hate-train against martin: we cannot always live in fear of potential hate and refuse to speak out. Being complacent will get us no where. he will always get hate unfortunately no matter what he does right or wrong. People just hate on cortis He is the leader, he oftentimes is the representative, and the most talkative member of the group.
Those who are unhappy about Martin getting critiqued and suggesting that the rest of the members should get critiqued as well bc they use aave- is this coming from a genuine place of holding the whole group accountable or do you want tit for tat bc your fave is getting critiqued and you’re scared for his behalf? This is where some of you may disagree with me but I think it’s not constructive to critique all the members at once. I think starting with Martin makes the most sense as he uses aave the most out of all the members. I think bc he is the leader and he is all about influencing one another- I think he would implement not using aave and influence the group to stop as well.
We need to start thinking critically and look at the bigger picture. Part of watching the people we care about grow is by educating them no matter how uncomfortable it is. Would you want to live in blissful ignorance and be stagnant in your growth or be uncomfortable at times to become a better person?
