Of course this image from this month’s newsletter had to make it to our social feeds! Kept Tabs covers Max Jones’ forensic analysis of explorer Fridtjof Nansen’s fame in the late 1800s. He compares two images of Nansen that appeared in the media.

One was a hasty sketch that mimicked glimpsing Nansen in the flesh and the other was this, an official portrait, looking posed and profound. Today, the former would be a photo snapped by the paps and the latter? The image would definitely make Nansen’s curated insta feed.
