@AusRepublic The @AusRepublic organisation is obsessed with symbolism and empty gestures. This obsession is what is unaustralian and what loses you referendums. No pledges by anyone, and no head of state, whether hereditary or elected. Parliament and cabinet are enough.
@LHSyd If I have this right, there are 21 seats on offer and to take a very crude measure there are currently 20.7 quotas above her and less than 1 quota below her. She'd need to soak up an overwhelming no. of Lyle Shelton and Craig Kelly 2nd preferences to get even close, sadly
@DavidPocock Everyone seems to treat this as only a question of speed. My answer is better public transport around Canberra itself, so that I don't feel I'll need a car when I get there. If that was resolved, I wouldn't mind taking a train that took 5 or 6 hours
@Sydney_Stations It's not just the land of the parking lot that they waste. Such facilities are used to post-rationalise vast suburban sprawl in surrounding areas. Look at car parks built on South West Rail Link supporting sprawl at Oran Park etc.
Though also traumatising, it is thrilling to be a part of a country while it is actively going through the difficult process of redefining itself from top to bottom, all in relative peacetime #treaty#yestothevoice#changethedate
@JodyBrownArch In large companies we need to stop seeing long hours as an indicator of initiative and ambition and start seeing it as a sign of a poor manager in the making

Today has proven that modern democracies need institutions that embody the long arc of history, both as a moderating force against the short-termism of modern politics, and to hold/be held to account on long-lived injustices that all other offices can evade responsibility for.
John Howard counted on our inability to hold current governments to account for previous governments' injustices when he rejected the βblack armband view of historyβ, rejected the need for any Apologies.
