China now publishes more research papers in high quality journals than the US or EU. China's rise over the past 2 decades has been astounding.

It is important to realise that China's rise in R&D happened along with her rise in induatrial prowess. These two cannot be decoupled.

India has a lot of work to do here. I would suggest a "National Technology Mission" to specifically identify the broad spectrum of fields where we have to catch up industrially and encourage public-private as well as academia-industry collaboration. We should also establish national awards for the high ranked teams in each sub field.

Finally people who are pessimistic because "corruption" or "politics" or "reservation" etc such pessimism was also common in China. China didn't end pervasive corruption or become a democracy before she rose as a technological power.

India can rise too and we don't need everything to be perfect. We need optimism and the can do spirit.

This is Atefeh Sahaaleh, a sixteen-year-old Kurdish/Iranian girl executed for being raped for three years, raped so severely in prison that she couldn't walk.

She took off her hijab in court and threw her shoes at the judge after realizing she was losing the case, and because of that, the judge insisted on placing the noose around her neck himself.

Born in Mashhad, Atefeh's mother died in a car accident when she was five. Shortly after, her younger brother is said to have drowned in a river. Her father became a drug addict, and she was forced to care for her octogenarian grandparents. Despite her attention to their needs, they are reported to have completely ignored her. She was described as a "lively and intelligent girl."

Atefeh was convicted of crimes against chastity after being raped repeatedly by Ali Darabi, a 51-year-old ex-revolutionary guard turned taxi driver. Darabi was a married man with children at the time.

Atefeh had been raped by Darabi over three years without her family being aware. While in prison, she was further tortured and raped by prison guards. She told this to her grandmother, who visited her, saying that afterward, she could only walk on all fours because of the pain.

The judge in her case was Haji Rezai. When Atefah realized she was losing her case, she removed her hijab, an act seen as severe contempt of the court, and argued that Ali Darabi should be punished, not her. She even removed her shoes and threw them at the judge. Rezai later sentenced her to death.

According to the BBC, the documents presented to the Supreme Court of Appeal described her as 22, but her birth and death certificates stated that she was 16. The issue of her age was not brought to proper attention before it was too late.

She was publicly hanged from a crane in Neka on August 15, 2004. Amnesty International and other organizations declared her execution to be a crime against humanity and children of the world.

Another Iranian woman was recently hanged for stabbing her husband because he was abusive to her and her kids. But she suffered a heart attack before she was hanged and died but they still hanged her. Yeah, that’s the level of sinister and cruelty that is the Islamic Republic of Iran.

A man in Iran killed his daughter but repeatedly raped her first so she wouldn’t make it to their version of heaven as she wouldn’t be a virgin, essentially damning his child to hell for eternity. She was a minor.

The child in Iran is the property of the father; if in any way the child makes the father look "bad," he can kill the kid scot-free. The same goes for wives.

Religion makes ordinary people do the most horrible things. They think they are justified because their made-up big brother in the sky said so.
