Indian judges enjoy de facto immunity.

Govt cannot investigate a sitting HC/SC judge without CJI’s approval. Even registering an FIR requires the President’s consent (Governor for HC judges), and has to be based on CJI’s advice.

Removing corrupt judges (if any)* is nearly impossible, as it requires impeachment by Parliament, a cumbersome process that has NEVER been completed in India. Even if convicted of corruption, a judge isn’t automatically removed; impeachment is still needed.

These safeguards were designed to protect judicial independence but also ended up shielding corruption (if any)*. With social media amplifying news and public pressure, at least some feathers are ruffled. But before that, corrupt higher judiciary judges (if any)* almost had a free pass.
