The ending is supposed to feel like a fumble. THAT’S the point. You spend two hours following a regular guy who thinks he’s just delivering an organ, watching him keep helping people he probably should’ve left behind, and somehow he gets close to the very people who could’ve saved him. Then the virus finishes the job, and suddenly this guy we spent the whole movie following becomes just another infected that the next squad would unload a magazine into without even knowing his name.

That’s very Resident Evil. Bryan was never meant to clear Raccoon City like Leon or Chris. He’s there to show you what the outbreak looks like from the perspective of the guy who ISN’T the hero. The package, his pregnant girlfriend, the voicemail that never sends, the scientists treating him like another problem, even the syringe going over the bridge. The whole movie keeps dangling the idea that maybe Bryan can make it out, only to remind you that this is Resident Evil. Sometimes the person you’re rooting for becomes the monster at the end.

And honestly, that’s why the ending works for me. If you wanted Bryan to walk out human, you wanted a different kind of #ResidentEvil movie. His entire story is about being a decent guy in a city that punishes you for stopping to care. He keeps helping people, and eventually that same instinct gets him bitten and turns him into the kind of boss fight someone else has to survive. They made you care about the NPC before showing you exactly why Raccoon City is full of bodies.
