Apple is launching the iPhone 18 Pro Max next month. And most people have no idea what's inside it.
Apple's first 2-nanometer chip. A variable aperture camera the first mechanical aperture in iPhone history. Apple's largest-ever battery. A smaller Dynamic Island. Satellite 5G that works beyond emergencies. And Apple's own C2 modem replacing Qualcomm for the first time.
This isn't a spec bump. This is the biggest Pro Max upgrade in 3 years.
The iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable "iPhone Ultra" are expected to be unveiled in the first half of September, with devices released in the second half of the month.
Apple is planning a major change to its iPhone release cycle this year. The more expensive iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will launch in fall 2026 alongside a foldable iPhone, but the more affordable iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e won't come out until spring 2027.
That means: if you want a new iPhone this fall you're buying a Pro. The standard iPhone 18 won't arrive until March 2027.
A mobile technology analyst who's tracked every iPhone launch since 2014 told me: "Apple is splitting the lineup for the first time. Pro models in September. Standard models in March. The fall 2026 launch is all-premium the Pro, the Pro Max, and the foldable. Every upgrade this year went to the Pro. If you're upgrading in September, here's everything that's changing."
Here are 12 features coming to the iPhone 18 Pro Max next month 🧵
@bsteffen Looks like a beautiful morning Bill, appreciate everything you have done during your career here in West Michigan. Thought this might be appropriate, sunset out of Saugatuck
@VZWSupport I am wondering if you have any plans to correct the absolutely horrible service in the Saugatuck area. By the way I am using a WiFi signal because my cell coverage doesn’t work.
