This afternoon, the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and the Uganda People's Defence Force (UPDF) successfully concluded a three-day proximity commanders’ meeting held in Nyagatare district from 18th to 20th June 2025. The meeting concluded with the signing of the official minutes, reflecting recommendations made on various key issues.

Over the course of the discussions, both sides assessed tactical developments and made important decisions. The resolutions adopted will act as guiding principles, strengthening the shared commitment to continued cooperation.

A delegation from the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), led by Maj Gen Paul Muhanguzi, Commander of the 2nd Infantry Division, which is in Rwanda for a proximity commanders' meeting in Nyagatare, Eastern Province, took the opportunity to tour the National Liberation Museum Park in Mulindi, Gicumbi District.

The delegation received a detailed briefing on the conduct of Rwandan Liberation Struggle, which ended the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The presentation emphasized the role of the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) and its military wing, the Rwandan Patriotic Army (RPA), in the liberation struggle from 1 Oct 1990 to 4 July 1994.

The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) are meeting in Nyagatare, Eastern Province, from 18–20 June 2025 for the fifth Proximity Commanders’ Meeting. The purpose of the meeting is to review the prevailing security situation, address challenges affecting border communities, and strengthen security along the Rwanda–Uganda border.

The three-day meeting has brought together commanders and staff from RDF Infantry Divisions deployed along the Rwanda–Uganda border, led by Brig Gen Pascal Muhizi, Commander of the RDF 5th Division, and their counterparts from the UPDF 2nd Infantry Division, headed by Maj Gen Paul Muhanguzi, the Division Commander.
