Statement from Bishop Dr. Imad Haddad on the Attack on Starmountain (Sternberg) Support Center by Israeli Settlers
This week we as a church were very disturbed to hear about Israeli settlers trespassing and damaging agricultural facilities at the Starmountain (Sternberg) Support Center for people with disabilities near Ramallah.
The Starmountain Center is operated by our partners from the Moravian Church and serves approximately 100 children and youth with intellectual disabilities. Last Friday, the 9th of October, a large group of Jewish Israeli settlers broke into the facility, damaging the property’s fence. On Monday the 11th, the farmer at the center noticed significant destruction in the greenhouse, including slashed tarpaulins, uprooted plants, and destroyed irrigation pipelines, suggesting the group broke in on Sunday as well and caused additional damage.
The severity and urgency of this situation cannot be overstated. This is illegal violent trespassing and destruction of property that could escalate even further at any time. The current physical damage caused to the facility is compounded by the intense psychological damage to those who attend and work in the center. As the Moravian Church shared in their statement, if Starmountain is no longer seen as a safe place for people with disabilities, this important work will not be able to continue.
This attack on Starmountain Center is part of an extremely concerning pattern of Israeli settler violence in the areas around Ramallah. Palestinian homes, agricultural lands and institutions are all under threat of violence, putting numerous lives at risk. No Palestinians in the West Bank are exempt from this threat, including Christian communities and institutions. As Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land, I call for immediate and decisive action from international governments and faith leaders to take action to support Starmountain Center and to protect the rights of Palestinians to live in peace and safety.
@maximumpain333 History is replete with theorists postulating in-groups and out-groups, with the former always being somehow special and chosen. How is your avatars vs. NPC’s any different, pray tell?
Speak up before it is too late.
If we fail to organise, conscription officers will come to Britain. They will grab your fathers, your brothers and your sons to die in a Ukrainian ditch or Iranian dune. The enemy is at home, not abroad.
It's so difficult to explain to the outside world what it has meant to live in the West Bank in the last few months.
The level of Israeli violence we have been witnessing has not only been unprecedented, but it's beyond rogue and feral.
Israelis, whether in the army or not, have been armed not just with military grade weapons like M16s, but they've been provided with drones.
Every neighborhood in the West Bank faces some form of Israeli violence every day. It's either settlers carrying out pogroms, shooting Palestinians in their own lands and homes, or the army and police detaining Palestinians and subjecting them to torture as a sadistic ritual.
As Palestinians we've been stripped of all capacity to not just push back, but to even remain on our lands.
BRIEF:
Water has been systemically cut off, electricity is slowly cut off, access to hospitals and education is ruptured, there are economic restrictions on money flow while Israeli soldiers carry out organized and systemic robbery of Palestinians (stealing money from people on checkpoints, stealing gold from homes, and even carrying out army-sanctioned robberies of hundreds of thousands of dollars from official money exchange offices).
The West Bank feels so dystopic, every day we wait to see if Israelis have come up with a reason to carry out their sadistic games of violence. Whether it's some Jewish holiday, or some other excuse, we're always just waiting to see what event Israelis will evoke that day to attack us.
It's like a daily waltz with death. You either survive another day, or you don't.
@SimonDixonTwitt Outstanding. You seem to have arrived at the same place Jesus did in his struggle against the monetary system: that is to ‘come out!’ (Ekklesia!) of it and build alternative communities of love.
What is the big picture? The really big picture? I'll tell you. The 4,400 year old private interest-bearing moneylending system that's provided Western economies with their core dynamic is rapidly collapsing into an abyss of misallocated investments, over-leveraged and unpayable private debt, human redundancy, social inequality and headless violent reactions.
The system has already undergone two major civilizational collapses and numerous near-collapses. It relies on the relentless extraction of surplus from human activity and the environment, which is then monetised, leveraged and recycled as interest-bearing debt by greedy, uncultured, private elites and small-time emulators for their short-term gain. Accumulating assets and recirculating money as private debt is perversely regarded as the pinnacle of 'individual freedom'.
There is no inherent logic of permanence regarding the benefits temporarily enjoyed by the mass of workers and consumers during the brief social democratic era. Nor is there an inherent logic of environmental sustainability other than the clumsy, ex post facto and too easily manipulable price mechanism.
The replacement of this system, whilst avoiding the mistake of the demarketised, totally centralised command economy, depends on the democratic issue of currency as a public utility with investments targeted towards long-term social and environmental needs. That simple? The system was built on a disarmingly simple principle, and the elite are desperate that we should never understand it or regard it as replaceable.
While China tries to apply the principle of public purpose in a cagey game with the financialised, dollar-dependent global system, in the post-Keynesian neoliberal West only @TheGreenParty has made noises about this core issue. What stands in the way? Oligarchic power, relentless indoctrination, miseducation, ignorance, cynicism, demoralisation and absence of will. This system has crushed the West's soul and narrowed its intellect. Fyodor Dostoevsky was one of the few who regularly drilled down to the bedrock.
"You know, for instance, beforehand with positive certainty that this man, this most reputable and exemplary citizen, will on no consideration give you money; and indeed I ask you why should he? For he knows of course that I shan’t pay it back. From compassion? But Mr. Lebeziatnikov, who keeps up with modern ideas, explained the other day that compassion is forbidden nowadays by science itself, and that that’s what is done now in England, where there is 'political economy'."
