Upon reading the excerpt in class, I think what makes the moon hoax so believable is the amount of descriptive details, almost too specific to be made up. It really reads like someone who saw those moon creatures with his own eyes #comm106
Wow this War of the Worlds reading has striking parallels to when we talked about people's supposed astonished first reactions to film... It seems we are always obsessed with new technologies seeming real, just like the VR of today #comm106
@junpei_taguchi I guess this proves that Socrates was right... no one ever tries to make their face-to-face conversations feel like sermons, but dissemination platforms are always trying to make themselves feel more intimate and personal #comm106
Sure you can't be certain that your dog loves you back, but then again can you be sure that any humans do? If true spirit-to-spirit communication is impossible, we could all just be interpreting messages how we want #comm106
@VtranCommClass I mostly agree, but usually I think of propaganda as deliberately produced by a state for the sole purpose of forming people's views, while many examples of media imperialism just happened accidentally or was secondary to the entertainment aspect #comm106
@_Nonso_M In spite of this, I feel like there are still plenty of present day people who don't realize that most "reality" shows aren't even reality. A lot of us may have gotten smarter, but there are still many people influenced by media #comm106
"Deride and Conquer": Very insightful, but dang, the Cosby Show analysis didn't age very well... "cuddliest" is not the first word that comes to mind when I think of Bill Cosby :/ #comm106
@epierpont2 That made me wonder... As media continues to evolve, it probably won't be long until entertainment through technology like virtual reality and sense manipulation is so realistic it is indistinguishable from real life! A literal dream-state trance is probably not far off #comm106
What's the second model of media effects/media influence in Schudson? All I can find is the "hypodermic" model of propaganda but I can't locate the second one #comm106
@CommSean @FellyTheCommGuy I agree, and I think if you're a journalist and you want to let your bias show in your writing, the right thing to do is be upfront about it. Otherwise many unsuspecting readers will unknowingly receive a skewed view on the topic which can be dangerous #comm106
It seems like journalists just can't win with some people. If they report on something controversial, people say they're spreading propaganda to further an agenda. If they ignore it, they are silencing and erasing history. What's the media supposed to do? #comm106
@junpei_taguchi Good point! It's funny how it seems that today, when verifying a source is as easy as googling something, people are MORE likely to fall for a hoax than ever before. You'd think that fake news would disappear as users become more internet savvy, but sadly it hasn't #comm106
Just as mass printing lead to nationalism, I would suppose that the Internet lead to a global nationalism, in the sense that it provided for the first time everyone on Earth a connected public sphere in which they could discourse and feel a sense of community #comm106
Anonymity can be beneficial to the public sphere if it allows you to voice unpopular opinions you may otherwise be too shy to share. Unfortunately, on the internet, anonymity normally just seems to allow trolls and bullies to be more bold and detract from the discussion #comm106
@VtranCommClass I agree! In addition, an aspect of modern photography that Sontag din't really touch on a lot because of her pre-dating "selfie culture" is this wave of narcissism that snapchat and instagram allow with how easy it is to share pictures of yourself with your friends #comm106
How would Berger react to male semi-nudity on the covers of romance novels and movie posters/ads aimed towards women? Would he see this as a step towards equality or as just as problematic as female nudes? #comm106
The difference between dialogue and dissemination also seems to be the reason I answer texts and snapchats yet often find myself deleting most of the daily flood of Hamilton-related emails without reading them #comm106
@emily_rivito To some extent I think it does. Musical dialogue is rare, but if someone ever wrote a personalized song just for me, I would treasure it a lot more than some radio hit I can't relate to. When a message is only aimed towards you, it holds more personal value. #COMM106
