Justin Drake, a leading researcher at the Ethereum Foundation, has introduced an experimental roadmap titled “Strawmap,” outlining a comprehensive restructuring plan for Ethereum through the end of the decade.
A New Map for a Multi-Year Overhaul
The proposal quickly received endorsement from Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin. Its ambition is clear: enable Ethereum to process tens of thousands of transactions per second, achieve transaction finality within seconds, and remain secure in a post-quantum computing era.
Rather than promising a single “mega-upgrade,” Strawmap breaks the journey into seven major upgrades extending through 2029, with an ideal cadence of one hard fork every six months.
Strawmap organizes the protocol into three core layers: Consensus Layer, Data Layer, and Execution Layer. Each major fork is expected to focus on one primary improvement in the consensus layer and one in the execution layer. This structure aims to preserve a rapid release cycle while maintaining technical risk control. Forks follow alphabetical naming conventions such as Altair, Bellatrix, Capella, Deneb, Electra, and Fulu. Near-term milestones like Glamsterdam and Hegotá already have official names, while longer-term phases remain provisional. The Strawmap document will be updated at least quarterly to reflect research progress and community feedback.
Drake emphasizes that Strawmap is not a prophecy, but a coordination tool. It places multi-year technical initiatives into a unified strategic framework. The document targets a highly technical audience including researchers, core developers, and Ethereum governance participants, moving beyond the short-term mindset that typically centers on only the next few forks.
Unlike competing blockchains that market hundreds of thousands of transactions per second, Strawmap signals a fundamentally different strategy. Ethereum aims to become the central data infrastructure layer for the broader ecosystem.
Rather than processing every transaction directly on Layer 1, Ethereum seeks to optimize its role as a high-throughput data highway for Layer 2 networks. Applications such as gaming, social platforms, or on-chain AI may process millions of transactions off-chain, but anchor their data and proofs back to Ethereum for security. In this framing, Ethereum does not aim to be the fastest blockchain. It aims to be the foundational settlement and data layer that other blockchains depend on.
