🔹 This case involves the recovery of a Passphrase for a client's Ethereum wallet on Metamask.
🔹 Initially, the client contacted us because he suddenly couldn't find his Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) wallet. Unexpectedly, his WBTC had disappeared, and he was confused about what had happened.
- The client explained that he had purchased WBTC in 2022 and transferred it to his Metamask wallet, which was linked to a Trezor device. He had not checked his account until now when he saw the price of BTC rising and decided to check his portfolio, only to discover that his bitcoin wallet was missing.
- After hearing his story, our team began by asking if the client had set a Passphrase.
- The client confirmed that he had set one and had tried entering it, but none of the passwords he thought he might have set were correct.
- The client further explained that he had contacted both Trezor and Metamask, but the companies confirmed that they do not store clients passphrases, and this passphrase was not stored on any hardware or anywhere else. Therefore, in this case, the companies could not assist him.
🔹 We concluded that the issue stemmed from an incorrect Passphrase. We asked for specifics about the length and characters of the Passphrase he set, including if it involved Thai or English letters, numbers, and special characters, and whether he had a complete Seed phrase and wallet address.
- The client was uncertain about the exact Passphrase but typically used two sets:
-1. 10 characters (6 letters and 4 numbers)
-2. 8 characters (4 letters and 4 numbers).
And He had a Shamir backup Seed phrase in two out of three parts and confirmed that he hadn’t saved the wallet address.
- After our initial assessment, we informed the client about the potential for recovery, stating that the Seed phrase (Shamir backup) and the Passphrase were possible to recover, but he needed to locate the actual wallet address storing the WBTC before proceeding.
🔹 The client agreed to our service, and we began drafting a contract and assisting in locating the wallet address. The search was extended due to the client’s prior use of various dapps before purchasing bitcoin.
- After locating the wallet address, we set up scenarios to model all potential Passphrase misentries covering misprints and additional characters across Thai and English keyboards. This meant the potential Passphrase lengths varied between 7 to 11 characters, including Thai and English letters, numbers, and special characters.
- Eventually, after running our program for five days, we successfully identified the correct Passphrase, which differed from the one the client provided by one additional character due to a typing error.
🔹 In conclusion, it is evident that passphrases should be used with caution. Always ensure to review the passphrase and verify its accuracy every time.
Therefore, if you are experiencing issues with your cryptocurrency wallet, you can consult with KeyRecovery for free. We do not request your seed phrase or any private keys before you agree to sign a contract for our recovery services.
