I would like to introduce you to the newest member of our class, Dr. Seuss, who hatched from his shell this morning!

[Katie A Falconer @kfalconer109]

In happier news, one of shelled chicks started to hatch yesterday. We'll keep you posted in his progress!

[Katie A Falconer @kfalconer109]

We're sad to report that our last chick has died. The kids came to the conclusion that there was just too much bacteria for him to handle.

[Katie A Falconer @kfalconer109]

If you look closely, you can see their thin necks and little wings! You can also see two little eyes looking up at you!

[Katie A Falconer @kfalconer109]

Two of our embryos have clear benzalkonium cloride which we believe means they are not growing bacteria & have a good chance of making it.

[Katie A Falconer @kfalconer109]

We can see the amniotic vesicles around the embryo & they're moving. We lost 1 more, but still have 4 viable embryos growing and moving.

[Katie A Falconer @kfalconer109]

The others that died were in cups that got knocked over, so this is the first one we've had this batch that has died due to unknown reasons!

[Katie A Falconer @kfalconer109]

Our chickens are going strong! #We had one that stopped developing, but 6 are left! They have been really moving today!

[Katie A Falconer @kfalconer109]

The 4th graders came to check out our latest attempt! The kids filled them in on what we changed! @TerriJermain

Notice the blocks underneath which keep the embryos at an angle. They are rotated 2x a day to help with even development.

[Katie A Falconer @kfalconer109]

To help the embryos get oxygen, he have a tube that runs into the incubator w/ smaller hoses that deliver oxygen to each cup

[Katie A Falconer @kfalconer109]

We put an antibacterial solution in the bottom of the cups, as well as disinfected the eggs before cracking to hinder bacteria growth!

[Katie A Falconer @kfalconer109]

Adding distilled water to the calcium lactate before transferring the embryos!

[Katie A Falconer @kfalconer109]

Attempt number 2. Ten viable embryos with strong heartbeats. We have researched & not taken any short cuts this time so we are hopeful!

[Katie A Falconer @kfalconer109]

@NwScienceEd Once they evaluated the cup & talked to our HS science teacher, they also think that bacteria grew in the cup & made them sick.

[Katie A Falconer @kfalconer109]

@NwScienceEd Initially, the students believe that the chicks died due to lack of oxygen because of the color of the vessels.
