AP seeks halt to Palamuru-Rangareddy works, revives Krishna water-sharing dispute ⁉️

Andhra Pradesh has stepped up its objections to Telangana’s irrigation projects, seeking an immediate halt to construction works on the Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme (PRLIS) and several other projects in the Krishna basin.

In a letter to the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB), AP Special Chief Secretary for Water Resources Shashibhushan Kumar has sought inclusion of the issue in the board meeting scheduled for October 1.

AP contends that Telangana is taking up works without securing the required statutory clearances and has raised objections to projects including Kalwakurthy, Achampet, Makthal-Narayanpet-Kodangal and Gudendoddi.

The state has also opposed proposals to increase the capacity of the Relampadu reservoir under the Jawahar Nettempadu scheme and raise the Gudendoddi balancing reservoir to 15 TMC.

Objections have further been raised against several projects drawing water from the Pulichintala backwaters.

AP has cited the Supreme Court proceedings concerning PRLIS and argued that the project was initially permitted only as a drinking-water scheme requiring about 7.5 TMC.

It has also pointed to the return of the project’s DPR by the Central Water Commission and the ongoing Krishna water-allocation dispute.

At the same time, AP has renewed its demand for a 66:34 division of Krishna waters.

It wants the formula based on the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh’s 811 TMC allocation - 512 TMC for AP and 299 TMC for Telangana - to be implemented.

The renewed objections are likely to intensify the already contentious dispute over Krishna water rights and project clearances between the two Telugu states.
