There is an element of self-righteousness about non-partisans and people who decide to “organize outside of political parties” that has irritated me since I was a student activist.

All of them, literally all of them harbour this belief that not belonging to a political party somehow inherently makes them an ethical voice, above reproach and the ideal solution to the problems confronting society.

The characteristics are the same; a non-belief in voting, a belief in some undefined and loose coalition of sectors of society without any pragmatic leadership structures. Basically a fantasy that never becomes operational.

One that presupposes that individual actors cannot harbour the same elements of corruption, failure and disregard for the people as can be found in organised formations. Organised formations are constituted by individuals, and being an individual does not negate one’s own possibility to be corrupt and evil.

This country was liberated by organized formations, political parties key amongst them, under many important rallying calls, key amongst them being one man, one vote.

When prominent individuals discourage voting, while the right-wing consolidates behind the DA, with proxies such as Afriforum, Solidariteit, Vryheids Front +, then what is to become of black people?

Honestly, is using a platform propped up for you by black people, to fuel voter apathy amongst black people, not inadvertently encouraging the consolidation of anti-black policies and Neo-liberal racist economic policy?

We owe it to those who died for this freedom to push back against a creeping tendency of Thabo Mbeki and his associates to use the platforms they have BECAUSE OF POLITICAL PARTIES, to discourage voting simply because they are unhappy personally with whatever is happening in the ANC, or they believe their personal unelected NGO’s and foundations should run South Africa.

This is what Thabo Mbeki does every election cycle, he pronounces based on his feelings with whoever is leading the ANC that he will not vote or campaign. Now that he has come to a realisation that he will never have a grip on the ANC or SA again, he tries to run our lives using backdoors like National Dialogues, NGO’s and his Foundation. The first step in this is to push voter apathy.

The only difference now is that he has found someone else to do that irresponsible task for him.

These radio stations platforming pushers of voter apathy ought to reach out political parties to respond - and all political parties should unite on one thing, people must vote and shun those who spit on such an important democratic right.

This is a tendency we have picked up where they removed our posters on the M17 route as well. We will be providing evidence of this conduct to the IEC.
