Calvin's dad represents a transitory period in the popular zeitgeist. He isn't the patriarch of the 1950s but he's not the goofball tard dad character of the 90s onward. Even when everyone disagrees with him (camping trip, for ex) there is a sense that he is in the right.
It's greatest strength was its commitment to the tone and character beats of the Raimi movies. The biggest weakness was the commitment to militaristic tech fetishism of the MCU. Something that's only gotten worse with the sequels
