Today, the Saudis are effectively cut off from exporting or importing product via waterways - both the Iranian closure of Hormoz and the Yemeni blockade (Bab al-Mandab/Red Sea entrance) have ensured this.

Ironically, #KSA recognized in the UAE-Israel alliance a plan to do exactly the same last year when Tel Aviv moved into Somaliland and Emirati-backed troops launched a military surge in Yemen's south for further control of the port-heavy territory. [See map below to visualize how Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv together could sever Saudi Arabia's access to major shipping routes.]

The Israel-UAE axis sought to neuter and potentially even break up Saudi Arabia, and Riyadh finally recognized the threat.

Conversely, the Iranians - at least all officials I've spoken to over many years before this war - have always sought to prevent the kingdom's destabilization. They view a Saudi internal collapse as an event that could radiate throughout the region, and hamper West Asia's geopolitical/economic development for decades to come, which malign foreign actors would easily exploit.

Riyadh can make an easy decision now to partner with Iran, Pakistan, Egypt, Turkiye and craft a new security model in the Persian Gulf, including the design of land-based trade and pipeline infrastructure that benefit all West Asian stakeholders. No one will be excluded.

Or it can play along with this US war, see Iran as its prime enemy, destabilize it, then be left naked for when the Israelis and Emiratis come for Saudi Arabia - with tacit US approval and active UK assistance, of course.
