From the classrooms of the University of Ilorin 🇳🇬 to the heart of Russia! 🇷🇺✈️

Who says a Chemistry student can’t explore the world of media and storytelling?

I am Khadijah Abdulazeez , A Chemistry graduate 2025/26 from the University of Ilorin, and I am honoured to represent my university and Nigeria as one of the 15 finalists in the New Day Education International Journalism Competition 2026.

Four cities. Different cultures. Countless stories waiting to be told.

This is more than a journey; it’s a dream unfolding.

Come experience Russia through my lens! 🌍❤️

What is a Nigerian Chemistry graduate doing inside one of Russia’s oldest news agencies? 🇳🇬🇷🇺📰

Well, let me take you along!

As part of the New Day Education International Journalism Competition 2026, I had the incredible opportunity to visit TASS, one of Russia’s oldest and most prominent news agencies, right in the heart of Moscow as our first major stop in this expedition.

But here’s something fascinating! 😲

TASS traces its history back to 1904, meaning it existed 18 years before the Soviet Union was even established!

Originally founded as the St. Petersburg Telegraph Agency, it later became the Soviet Union’s central news agency in 1925. From the era of telegraphs to today’s digital journalism, TASS has witnessed more than a century of history, technological transformation and global events.

And here’s another interesting fact: after operating under the name ITAR-TASS for years, the agency returned to the name TASS in 2014!

As a Chemistry graduate from the University of Ilorin, this experience reminded me of something powerful: curiosity knows no academic boundaries.

Science teaches us to question, investigate and seek evidence. Journalism challenges us to do the same while telling stories that inform the world.
Different disciplines, yet connected by the pursuit of knowledge.

From the classrooms of UNILORIN to the world of international media, I’m learning that sometimes the most extraordinary opportunities begin when we dare to explore beyond our fields.

And this is only the beginning of my Russian expedition! ❤️

Did you know TASS existed before the Soviet Union?
