I learnt some few things from the Lekki Banner issue today—which are;

1. Apparently, the last time I had a Christian friend who didn’t believe that Jesus (may God be pleased with him) is God was during my secondary school days. Since then, I’ve neither known nor heard of any Christian with that belief. Today, it’s surprising to learn that there are many Christians who hold the same belief, with biblical evidence to back their claims.

2. Religious tolerance holds a bit of ground in the southwestern part of Nigeria due to the mixed-religious practices within extended families. It’s rare to find a family from this region that doesn’t have either a Muslim or a Christian as a family member, even within extended families spanning three generations. This makes it easier for people here to tolerate one another compared to other parts of the country.

3. From my brief survey on the internet (X and Facebook), those who insulted, cursed, and threatened people of different faiths over the Lekki banner issue are mostly individuals who know little about their own religion and how it teaches respect, not only for their faith but for others as well. Whatever these people said didn’t come from their religion but from their ignorance.

4. Islam, as a religion, guides Muslims through the words of the Qur’an and Hadith. Whatever comes from these sources, along with the practices of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), is considered perfect. Your emotions, social orientation, and cultural norms do not supersede these beliefs as a Muslim. If you believe in Allah, His Messengers, and the Last Day, you cannot hold a view contrary to the teachings of Islam, even when these teachings conflict with your family’s, friend’s, or neighbor’s religious beliefs. As a Muslim, you stand wholeheartedly by them.

5. There are people who dislike your religious beliefs and will say hurtful things to challenge your faith. The best way to express disapproval of their actions is to avoid them. Responding to such individuals in the same manner will only lead to ugly incidents, which would go against your religion. Instead, engage in constructive debates only with those who are willing to learn through evidence-based discussions.

6. The Lekki Central Mosque quoted words from the Qur’an to educate people of the same faith and others (non-Muslims, not just Christians). Were those words truly from the Qur’an? Yes. Did they hurt people who hold different beliefs? Yes. Does religion cater to your feelings when it is evidence-based? No. Did the Lekki Central Mosque remove the banner when the issue caused serious concerns among Christians who hold that belief? Yes.

7. Their intention was to educate, not to provoke. If their goal had been to provoke Christians, the banner would still be there, and anyone reacting negatively by forcefully bring down the banner would only make things harder for themselves because the words are from the Qur’an. It would be blasphemous if the statement wasn’t written in the Qur’an or if there weren’t Christians who believe that ‘Jesus is a Prophet.’

Religion is an evidence-based belief system—you either accept it or reject it. However, your rejection shouldn’t cause harm to others, either through words or actions.

I have read your analysis and I will only point out 3 flaws in it.

1. VAT From any Port and AIRPORT is directly accruable to FG and not Lagos state, Rivers, FCT and Kano where the international ports and airports are situated. All the revenues for Tin Can, Apapa, Onne ports AND MMA, Aminu Kano, PH, Akanu Ibiam and Nnamdi Azikwe airports are FG’s.

2. U said FG money was used to develop Lagos, the capital left that city 33 good years ago. Which state or state capital was not developed with FG money? Moreover, you intentionally left our most beautiful and most recent city - Abuja. Whose money was used to develop it?

3. In one of your tables, the population of Kano is slightly more than Lagos. That should translate to more consumption in Kano than Lagos bcos there are more peope in Kano than Lagos. Hence, Kano will always earn more; Katsina will always earn more than Bayelsa; Kaduna will always earn more than Ekiti, Oyo will always earn more than Kebbi, Rivers will always earn more than Gombe - Is this not fair and just enough?
