Commander Saleh Muhammad Registani, a senior military figure in the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan, has returned to the country after several years. He fought the Soviet invasion and occupation in the 1980s and the Taliban and Al Qaeda terrorist groups in the 1990s. Today we published his video message from inside Afghanistan. The resistance against terror and tyranny continues, and it is growing by the day. Since 2021, the people of Afghanistan, our neighbors and regional countries, and the international community have given the Taliban chance after chance to change course. They have wasted every one of them. At the same time, geopolitical shifts in the region and around the world have created conditions that has made the demise of the Taliban inevitable. The NRF is therefore intensifying its efforts and pursuing a clear strategy for the liberation of Afghanistan. Our goal is a democratic, pluralistic, and decentralized Afghanistan where all citizens are treated equally, whatever their gender, ethnicity, religious belief, or background. We want an Afghanistan free of terrorism and at peace with itself and its neighbors, a country that can become a source of security, stability, and prosperity for all its neighbors and the globe at large. After more than a century of war, oppression, extremism, and tyranny, Afghanistan deserves a new chapter of freedom, peace, democracy, and dignity for all its citizens. Yesterday, I had the honor of participating alongside the leader of the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan, @AhmadMassoud, in the Second European Conference of Ventotene for Freedom and Democracy, a European Union conference held in Ventotene, Italy. Mr. Massoud joined virtually, while I participated in person in a special session titled “Liberating Afghanistan”. In our remarks, we emphasized that Afghanistan’s struggle for freedom and democracy is part of the broader global struggle against authoritarianism, extremism, and terrorism. Mr. Massoud reflected on the 25th anniversary of the assassination of his father, the late Commander Ahmad Shah Massoud, and recalled his historic visit to the European Parliament in 2001, when he warned of the growing terrorist threat and presented his vision for a democratic Afghanistan where women and men would enjoy equal rights. During my intervention, I stressed that Europe must remain faithful to the values upon which the European project was built and truly demonstrate that it remains a beacon of democracy and human rights. At a time when democratic values are under increasing pressure around the world, Europe should not retreat from them. I argued that engagement and normalization with the Taliban, a genocidal terrorist group that has systematically deprived women of their most basic rights and dismantled Afghanistan’s political and civic freedoms, is neither a moral nor a sustainable policy. We also stressed that the continuation of a Taliban-occupied Afghanistan will only worsen the migration crisis confronting Europe and the wider region. As long as the people of Afghanistan face repression, insecurity, economic deprivation, and the denial of their fundamental freedoms, many will continue to be forced to leave their homeland. A liberated, stable, and democratic Afghanistan would address the root causes of this forced migration by creating the conditions for people to live with dignity, security, opportunity, and hope in their own country. Europe must therefore stand with the democratic forces of Afghanistan, support those struggling for freedom, and remain a defender of human rights and, particularly, women’s rights. The people of Afghanistan deserve the same freedoms and democratic rights that Europeans fought to secure for themselves. A stable future for Afghanistan cannot be built through accommodation with extremism, but through support for a democratic and pluralistic alternative. The importance of the conference was also reflected in the participation of senior European and international figures, including Vice President of the European Parliament @pinapic, Italian Foreign Minister @Antonio_Tajani, European parliamentarians and officials, as well as high-ranking figures from other democratic countries and prominent democratic opposition leaders and human rights advocates from around the world. Ventotene itself carries profound symbolism. It was here, during one of Europe’s darkest periods, that the ideas behind the Ventotene Manifesto were conceived and a vision for a free and democratic Europe took shape. That history reminds us that even when authoritarianism appears dominant, democratic ideas and determined people can ultimately prevail. The same must and will be true for Afghanistan. I extend my sincere gratitude to Vice President @pinapic for hosting this important conference and for inviting Mr. Massoud and me to be part of it. She has demonstrated through her words and actions that she is a true defender of democracy and a steadfast friend of those struggling for freedom against authoritarianism and extremism. At a time when democratic values are increasingly challenged, voices such as hers within Europe are more important than ever.

«از شمار دو چشم یک تن کم وز شمار خرد هزاران بیش» بیست‌وپنج سال از شهادت احمدشاه مسعود می‌گذرد؛ اما نام او، اندیشه او و آرمان او همچنان در رگ‌های مقاومت و آزادی‌خواهی این سرزمین زنده است. مسعود تنها یک نام در تاریخ نیست؛ عهدی‌ست با آزادی، عزت و استقلال افغانستان؛ عهدی که برای من از هر میراثی سنگین‌تر و از هر مسئولیتی مقدس‌تر است. راهی که او آغاز کرد، تا آزادی افغانستان ادامه خواهد یافت. یادت جاودان، آرمانت زنده و راهت پررهرو باد.
