I’m seeing this being discussed, so I feel obliged to speak.

Recently, certain Western actors, particularly the British Foreign Ministry, appear to be attempting to weaponise aid in Sudan to advance political objectives. Let’s be very clear: this is unacceptable. Politicising aid violates humanitarian principles and endangers the work of those on the ground.

The Emergency Response Rooms (ERRs) emerged after 15 April as a grassroots humanitarian response to the crisis. Their volunteers are humanitarians, not political actors. Yet the British Foreign Ministry is exploiting them to promote the false narrative that the ERRs have “effectively become the state,” and encouraging them as an alternative to Sudanese governmental authorities.

The ERRs must remain decentralised, independent, and depoliticised so they can continue their lifesaving work freely and safely.
