This is good. We don’t want to have a coronation and become like North Korea. I urge more people to put forward their names for the presidency so that it becomes competitive.
I also encourage Fuvahmulah Mayor Rafeeq to throw his hat in the ring. He runs the most successful council in Maldives with the best delivery record. If he believes he can replicate that success across the whole country, it would be great.
In many countries, successful leaders usually start at the local government level and gradually move up to national politics. They bring a lot of real experience with them. Most people care about the development they see in their own area or postal code, so councilors and mayors who deliver well at the local level are more likely to succeed later at the national level cause they understand people’s need better than people who never served at local level.
