Welcome Statement on the U.S. Ambassador’s Visit to Sri Darbar Sahib

We warmly welcome the Honorable U.S. Ambassador to Sri Darbar Sahib. Your visit to Sri Akal Takht Sahib, a center of leadership for the Sikh community’s religious, political, and collective affairs, is a matter of great pleasure for us.

The founding ideals of the United States and the principles of Sikhism share a commitment to human equality. The 1776 U.S. Declaration of Independence states, “All men are created equal.” In Akal Ustat, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji taught, ਮਾਨਸ ਕੀ ਜਾਤ ਸਭੈ ਏਕੈ ਪਹਿਚਾਨਬੋ Recognize the entire human race as one.” Both affirm the equal dignity of every person.

Americans and Sikhs also have historical connections. During Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s reign, the American Josiah Harlan served in administration, while Alexander Gardner served in the artillery. Today, Sikhs in the United States contribute to its social, economic, and public life. Dialogue with American institutions on religious freedom, human rights, and the safety of the Sikh community remains important to us.

The appointment of Sikh American @HarmeetKDhillon as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights is a source of pride for Sikhs in the United States and around the world.

We hope your visit will strengthen ties between American institutions and the Sikh community. On this occasion, we also extend an invitation to the President of the United States to visit Sri Darbar Sahib and Sri Akal Takht Sahib.
