Figo told us he had no regrets since he only ever encouraged people "to join rallies and peaceful civil disobedience movements" as was allowed in HK. His last act of resistance, captured by @khc1013 , was the 5/1 hand sign as he was marched into jail -- flanked by 7 officers.
More than just a loss of civil society and of democracy, Hong Kong today is a story of lost youth -- those like Figo who hoped to do exactly what Hong Kong activists have *always* done are now finding themselves incarcerated, and facing the possibility of decades in jail
But he soon became a convenor with no one to convene. Groups in the umbrella organization grew too afraid to show up: “There is no use in having me alone calm them down... The people with more influence are already in jail, and I appear to be just a boy.”
@chrf_hk has a special role in Hong Kong -- whenever they called for a march, even at the height of the 2019 protests, front-liners would honor their call for non-violence and restrain themselves at demonstrations. Figo became its convenor in Oct 2020, after the NSL
Figo's priorities in recent week: sampling lots of red wine, before he loses the ability to drink any alcohol at all. Watching lots of Netflix, but only his old favorites, so he doesn't miss any endings. Bulking up at the gym, so he isn't too scrawny for prison life.
In recent months, prominent activists and pro-democracy leaders here have disappeared into the correctional system with little time to prepare. Figo, though, always knew this was coming, as he planned to plead guilty to charges related to the Oct 1 2019 march
Having a 25-year old describe how "ready" he is for prison: this is the new normal in Hong Kong. An absolute privilege to follow and document @chrf_hk 's Figo Chan as he lives he last days as a free man, before he was remanded this week. w/ @theodorayuhk
