Noticed this yesterday and have had some questions on it, wet weather over the weekend favored development of these fungi. Shouldn’t have negative impact on grain quality.
@DarrenFischer Walked into a long term corn on corn field today and was swarmed by beetles. Corn was lodged in places and we haven’t had over a 25 mph wind by Marshall yet. I expect majority of that growers acres to be sprayed.
3. Work with your seed salesman/agronomist to understand and separate the hybrids you are planting this spring by vigor and emergence scores. Dry soil may be a factor this spring as well as the cooler temps to date.
Some things we learned from last years planting date study:
(April 11th planting date had 3" of snow on it the next day.)
1. Planting too early cost us about 20-30% of our desired final stand, which translated to about 9.5 bushels/acre or $43.51/acre ($4.58 corn)
2. Right genetics planted at the right time: 51C48 handled all planting dates well, but 5505 planted too early cost us 19 bushels/acre. 5505 planted in right conditions (50+ degree soil temps and warming) provided us the highest overall ROI in this study.
