🎙️ That was a song called “Skater.” And here we have your love for your juniors - it’s a xikers' song.
🐿️ I was involved in producing xikers’ first three albums or so.
🎙️ Wow. How did you manage to do all of that when you were so busy?
🐿️ So this is actually a song I really love. There are parts throughout it where the rapper members wrote the lyrics themselves, but I still remember so clearly when I was writing this verse. I’ve never talked about this before. Actually, I chose this song partly because of its overall feel, but even more because of the lyrics. I had to hand in these lyrics while I was at a shoot. We were working with a lot of different people within the EDEN-ary team, and in xikers’ case, at the time, their albums had to come out one right after another.
🎙️ Right. The schedule had to be followed to the letter.
🐿️ Exactly. The deadline was really close. Once I handed in the lyrics, they had to record a demo and send it off right away. But I couldn’t get to the studio. So I came out of the waiting room and went to the carnival [KIA car] - to the car, sorry. I went to the vehicle and started writing the lyrics there. There’s this part that I still really like. Right after the intro, there’s a lyric that goes, “It's a boring day, it's like a concocted formula I'd rather run even if I fall and bleed” [따분해 하루가 짜여진 공식 같아서 차라리 달리다 넘어져 피가 난대도]. That’s where the whole “Skater” theme came from. I was lying down in the car, trying to write the lyrics, but I couldn’t really think of much. But these friends/guys hadn’t been promoting for very long yet. So I thought that doing promotions, being in waiting rooms, and being in this car - all of these spaces must still feel so exciting to them. There’s that excitement when you get in the car and you’re on your way to a new schedule, you know? Of course, I still feel that excitement too, but for me, the car has become a somewhat more familiar space. So I thought, “Let me try using this as the theme. Then what would I be like? What would be a means of transportation that still feels a little unfamiliar to me?” And that’s when I thought of a skateboard. So I thought, “In a way, these guys are like skaters right now. They might be skaters who have never even ridden a skateboard before.” And once I started writing the lyrics from that idea, I got so excited.
🎙️ You’re so excited that you keep banging your foot against the desk.
🐿️ (laughs)
🎙️ No, it’s okay. I was just worried you might hurt yourself.
🐿️ I think I organized almost all of the lyrics in about twenty or thirty minutes. I had so much fun doing it. So the “청개굴개굴개구리” part was written by the rappers, and the part I wrote starts here, with “따분해 하루가…”
🎙️ Ah, but now I totally get it. I feel like I’d be able to recognize the parts you wrote no matter where they appeared. There’s this sense of writing that feels like something you’d write alone, but also like lyrics that were put together while actually making the sounds out loud.
🐿️ Right, right, right. While singing them.
🎙️ Exactly. There are pieces of writing that feel like they were written first and then became lyrics, and then there are pieces that feel like they were written as lyrics from the beginning. Yours feel more like the latter. It’s something that’s actually pretty hard to find these days. Rather than having the feel of the kind of writing you often see from idol songwriters these days, there’s something very composed about it - there’s a certain literary quality to it.
🐿️ Especially when I write in Korean, because it’s my native language, I find myself paying a lot more attention to that.
🎙️ Ah, you write so well. It’s annoying. (jokingly) Sorry.
🐿️ (laughs) No, no. I’m not exactly in a position to show off as a writer in front of you, though.
🎙️ You write really well. It seems like you’re just at that point right now where inspiration comes to you from everything.
🐿️ Yes. I think I am, to some extent.
🎙️ Write a lot. Really. Create a lot of work and leave a lot behind while you’re in a period like this.
🐿️ Thank you.
🎙️ But there’s something I want to quickly read out.
💭 I work at the same company as [his] father. I’ve seen him talking to his son on the phone a few times during meals, so I somehow feel a sense of familiarity with you, Hongjoong.
🐿️ Ah, seriously, this is because my father -
🎙️ Why?
🐿️ My father has a lunch break. And somehow, I keep ending up calling him during his lunch break. I try to call my mother and father once a day.
🎙️ What? Seriously? Was all of this already planned by the company too? “Call your father during his lunch break”? (joking)
🐿️ (laughs) No, no. Not at all, not at all. My parents sent me out into the world at a young age, so if I don’t contact them for about 3 days, they think something must be wrong. Well, rather than thinking something has actually happened, they think, “Hongjoong must be having such a hard time. His schedule must be so busy that he doesn’t even have time to call.” So whenever I think of it, I call them. Because it’s my way of saying, “I’m doing fine. I’m okay.” But sometimes when I’m on the phone with my father - actually, I’m not sure if I should tell this story. I’m seeing him in a couple of days, and he might say to me, “Why did you talk about that?” (laughs). But sometimes when we’re on the phone, normally, if you’re having a meal, you might step outside to take the call, or if it’s noisy, you might say you can’t hear very well. But my father, even when it’s noisy, just keeps going, “Oh, son~ Oh, son! Oh, Hongjoong-ah! Oh, Hongjoong-ah!
🎙️ He’s basically one step away from going, “Oh, isn’t that my son, Hongjoong from ATEEZ?” He might suddenly even start doing the dance.
🐿️ Ah, like this? [does the “BAD” chest move]
🎙️ Suddenly doing that.
🐿️ (laughs)

🎙️ This is a song called “AURORA.” This one is even older. It’s from 2019.
🐿️ It was a track I had written when I was a trainee. After we debuted and started performing, we actually went on tour only 4 or 5 months after our debut. And when we went on tour - you know lightsticks? We didn’t have one yet at the time. So people brought lightsticks from all sorts of different groups. ATEEZ didn’t really have a core fandom yet, so people came because they were curious, bringing all these different lightsticks - our sunbaemins’ lightsticks. And when I looked at them from the stage, especially during the encore, they kind of looked like an aurora to me.
🎙️ (gasps) I almost slipped into banmal (?). [this is] crazy.
🐿️ Yes (laughs). That’s how it looked to me. So right around then, as soon as the performance ended and I came down from the stage, I really wanted to write lyrics to that melody. So I searched through the tracks I had written in the past, and this track seemed to fit. Originally, it had more of an acoustic feel. So I took the track and started writing the lyrics and melody, and then when I came back to Korea, we developed it further. We transformed it into a track that fit the trends at the time a little better, and that became the song that was released.
🎙️ Hongjoong, if you hadn’t happened to be so handsome, you could’ve just become an incredible lyricist and composer. But because of your face, you ended up becoming a member instead, so now you can’t write as many songs (joking).
🐿️ (laughs)
💭 Isn’t he seriously a genius?
🎙️ I don’t throw the word “genius” around lightly. I could tell that this really wasn’t simply a song about an aurora. Because there’s that line, “I still haven’t found/looking for a word to describe something like this” [이런 걸 묘사할 단어를 난]. I wondered whether you had seen some kind of aurora-like light somewhere and written about that, or whether it was simply a beautifully designed lyric. But it turns out it came from a very specific image you actually saw.
🐿️ Right. What you just mentioned - it’s “a word to describe something like this,” [이런 걸 묘사할 단어] right? But the expression “something like this” [이런 걸] itself is actually very ordinary, and it’s not really…
🎙️ …[not] something you’d normally use in lyrics.
🐿️ Right. You don’t normally use it in lyrics. But that’s how spontaneously I wrote the words after the performance - I just went through and wrote them all in one go. I debated right up until the very end whether I should change “something like this” [이런 걸].
🎙️ That was the part that really got me.
🐿️ Exactly. But having that phrase there somehow made it resonate even more. So I didn’t change it.
🎙️ This is so, so important. Because that expression was what made me think, “Ah, this isn’t about an aurora,” and made me really curious about what this person was actually looking at.
💭 So that’s how people who make music think.
🎙️ Not everyone is like that, though. Because seeing all those different lightsticks from other groups and thinking of an aurora - I think that’s just Hongjoong’s creativity. That’s unbelievable. Woah…
🐿️ Oh, thank you.
🎙️ This is actually pretty amazing. Is this behind-the-scenes story widely known?
🐿️ The fans might know it.
🎙️ Ah, I wish this could have been revealed here for the first time (laughs).
🐿️ But I don’t really get many opportunities to talk about things like this. That’s actually what I briefly mentioned to you during the break earlier. When I write lyrics and a song comes out, there honestly aren’t that many places where I can talk about things like this. And as you can probably tell, I’m the type of person who has a lot of things I want to talk about. So my manager-nim asked me, “Now that the track [ENOuGH] is out, is there anything you want to do?” At first, I couldn’t think of anything. But I listen to sunbaemin's radio show from time to time, so I told my manager hyung, “If there’s ever an opportunity [for me] to go on a radio show, could you ask about it for me?” So actually, my manager hyung came here and knocked on the door [for me].
🎙️ The person we couldn’t get to come on the show no matter how many times we knocked ended up walking in on his own. Thank you so much, manager-nim (joking).
🐿️ (laughs) Because I wanted to talk.
🎙️ From now on, whenever you feel like that, and if I’m doing th live, just open the door and come in anytime. We’ll stop everything, talk for a bit, and then you can say, “All right, I should get going now.”
🐿️ (laughs) If I’m bored?
🎙️ Yes. If you suddenly think, “Oh, I just thought of something I need to talk about regarding music,” you can just burst through the door.
💭 Hearing the stories behind the songs and then listening to ATEEZ’s music makes it feel even more moving and makes it resonate with me more. As a hyung in my thirties? An ahjussi [middle-aged man]? I’m leaving with a lot of comfort again.
🐿️ A hyung. We’re not that far apart in age
🎙️ Right.
🐿️ Yes, a hyung, of course.
🎙️ And I really think that’s true. Because in the entertainment industry, especially in the idol industry, being in your 8th year is, in my view, almost equivalent to being twenty years into an ordinary working career. So I think that the truly shining moment of someone who has persevered diligently all this time while keeping the same heart can be deeply inspiring to a lot of people too.
💭 Hongjoong, genius among geniuses, my baby Mozart, Bach, Beethoven.
🐿️ This might sound a little strange [to you], but…
🎙️ No, it doesn’t sound strange. What part of it would?
🐿️ To me, it’s actually very familiar… (laughs)
🎙️ Does that [whole phrase] come as one set?
🐿️ Yes, it’s one set. “Baby” absolutely has to be in there. “Baby” is the key here.
🎙️ But when fans love their star so much that they start seeing them as a baby - do you understand why that feeling develops?
🐿️ This is kind of funny too, but I’ve actually thought about this before. Because I thought, “I can understand my mother and father feeling that way, since I’ll always be their child. But why do people who are younger than me think of me as a baby?” But when you look at a baby, you feel proud of them and everything they do seems endearing, right? Recently, I realized, “Ah, so it comes from that kind of feeling.” And I’m actually very grateful for this, but when we're doing fansigns and things like that, even if I’m just drinking water, the fans look at me so fondly and capture those moments of me. Watching that made me realize, “Ah, just like with a baby, whatever I do, they feel proud of me and see it as something bigger.” You know how your own child seems like a genius at everything (laughs).
🎙️ Although in Hongjoong’s case, I think “genius among geniuses” is a pretty reasonable title for the fans to give you.
💭 [마음으로 낳아서 (?)] because [we] gave birth to him with our hearts (?)
💭 Ah, our precious baby captain.
💭 He’s adorable even when he’s just breathing.
🎙️ And there’s that kind of expression too, you know - that there’s nothing about them you wouldn’t cherish.
🐿️ Ah, yes, right, right.
🎙️ Saying someone is “like a baby” or “like your little baby” carries this sense of tenderness and affection, and sometimes you also start worrying about them and feeling for them. For me, that was the kind of feeling that came when my fangirling for someone reached its peak. When you look at your star’s incredibly busy schedule, you’re happy, but at the same time you think, “What are they going to do, being that busy?” It’s the same with your children. Parents are so happy to hear that you’re busy, but your mother will still ask, “Are you eating properly? Are you -”
🐿️ Right, right, right. Even if I cough just a little, they worry so much.
