Former President Barack Obama urged Americans to reject “cynicism and division” at the opening of the Obama Presidential Center on Chicago’s South Side.
The center, which is somewhat a departure from the traditional presidential library model, is designed as a community gathering space, with a 19-acre park and a public library branch.
Democratic socialism appears to be on the rise in the U.S. The progressive ideology gained prominence when New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani took office. Now, more candidates seem to be gaining momentum in major U.S. cities. CBS News’ @NikolenDC reports.
CBS News contributor Marc Caputo says President Trump "has encountered his limits" during the Iran war, "but he's not going to admit it."
Caputo shared that he's received indications from advisers to the Trump administration that if President Trump had the option to go back in time, "he wouldn't have gone to war the way he did against Iran."
"My feeling is that deep inside of Trump, there's a little bit of resentment toward Netanyahu, who was a leading proponent for this action," he says.

After more than a decade in the making, the Obama Presidential Center and Library opened in Chicago on Thursday.

Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-NY) pushed back on criticism from primary challenger Darializa Avila Chevalier that his campaign donations from pro-Israel supporters influence his positions.
"No one tells me how to vote, but my constituents," Espaillat said. “The difference between her and I is that I believe in a two-state solution, and she doesn't believe in the existence of Israel."

The Obama Presidential Center in Chicago is making history with features of typical presidential libraries — like a replica of the Oval Office and the first lady’s ball gowns — and non-traditional aspects, like an NBA regulation-sized basketball court.
President Trump will not be in attendance at Thursday’s dedication ceremony. He was not invited, marking the first time a sitting president will not attend the opening of a presidential library.
How does D.C.'s Democratic socialist frontrunner for mayor, Janeese Lewis George, compare to New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani?
The D.C. councilwoman said she hasn't met with Mamdani or "consulted with him," but wants to deliver some of the same campaign promises her and the NYC mayor share.
"Mayor Mamdani has been able to deliver real results for New York residents, and I think this election is a moment where people are tired of hearing about what government can't do," she told @NikolenDC. "They want to see what government can do when you show up for them and when you put people first."
As Georgia voters head to the polls for statewide runoff elections on Tuesday, Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) argued that the Supreme Court’s Voting Rights Act decision has enabled politicians to redraw districts in ways that allow them to "pick their voters rather than the voters picking" their representatives.
"The Supreme Court did a lot of damage to our electoral system," Warnock told CBS News' Major Garrett. He later added, “The Supreme Court is moving us backwards. They are enabling Donald Trump and his partners in Congress to diminish the voices of the people who I think are well poised to hold them accountable.”
A record 242 U.S. cities now have starter homes valued at more than $1 million, according to Zillow, up from 80 cities in 2020.
“It’s fundamentally a supply story,” says Zillow senior economist Orphe Divounguy, telling CBS News' Major Garrett that a lack of new housing construction has pushed up prices.
