Peter Landin was a computer scientist, born in the 1930s. His mathematical insights and theories laid the groundwork for what would stem the development of universal programming languages. He was openly bisexual and was involved with the Gay Liberation Front. #LGBTHM21
He also wrote one of the first music programs that could play "Baa Baa Black Sheep." He's known as a founder of CPL, a programming language that is often regarded as the precursor to C; a highly advanced language that is still used today. #LGBTHM21
One of our pupils Jamie researched Christopher Strachey was the son of one of Alan Turing's codebreakers during WW2. Strachey studied Maths and Physics at King's College Cambridge. He developed a program that allowed the "Pilot Ace Computer" to play a game of checkers. #LGBTMH21
Last week some of our S1 pupils participated in STEM Ambassadors in Scotland Week, researching and engaging with careers that involve mathematics! Here are some of the wonderful posters made by 1H and 1N, fantastic work 👏🤓 #STEMAmbassadorsinScotland#DreamBig
In 1954, he died of cyanide poisoning which was later determined as suicide. In 2013, Turing was pardoned and helped drive the “Alan Turing law” of 2017 which granted pardons to all men convicted of same-sex relations. The movie ‘The Imitation Game’ follows his work. #LGBTHM21
Alan Turing was a British scientist, cryptographer, and mathematician. He played a huge part in cracking coded messages that helped defeat the Nazis in WWII. In 1952 Turing was convicted of ‘homosexual acts’ and was chemically castrated as an alternative to prison. #LGBTHM21
📢S1 & S2 pupils! 📢Our Virtual STEM club has officially launched @KirkintillochHS Each week a challenge or experiment will be posted on here and our Virtual STEM club Team - look out for joining code on your year group team👀
We would love for ANYONE to try the tasks and tag us!
This month is LGBT History Month, and the KHS maths department are proud to be shining a light on LGBT figures in mathematics, all prepared and researched by our amazing pupils!

She presented papers on various mathematical topics; despite being denied entry to university due to being a woman! She also had a relationship with another female mathematician, Gosta Mittag-Leffler. #LGBTHM21
