"My husband works offshore with a vessel operated by Sigma Oilfield.

He works as an intercontinental chef in the catering section. On the 29th of July 2024, he went to work because it’s a 45-minute helicopter flight from the airport to where the vessel is in the sea.

A week after his arrival at work, he gave me a d!str£ss call via WhatsApp that there was a g@ng-up against him, that since he entered, they said all the meals prepared were not tasty. He has been working there since 2011.

When he gave me the call, I told him not to qu@rr£l with anyone; he should just calm down.

On the 6th of August 2024, he was nowhere to be found. They said his phone and his wallet were seen on his bed, but they didn’t see him.

Since that day till date, my husband is nowhere to be found. His phone and wallet were returned to us after one year of the inc!d£nt.

Three days after his disappearance, a baker there was asking me for his phone password. And when my husband gave me that call, he said he was being thre@ten£d by the Campos. Campos is the head of the catering section.

Till that day of his disappearance till now, my husband’s family, my people, we’ve made a lot of moves. We’ve done a petition to the IG, the owner of the vessel, the contractor at the time my husband was working there.

We petitioned the person who was asking for his password. We petitioned the Campos through the IG of police. And the petition was approved and taken to Port Harcourt.

The police invited them for investigation. The Prestige told his lawyer to represent him. The Campos went, but the owner of the vessel refused to honour the invitation of the police.

The baker, rather than going to the station, sued us. He sued the police and me through his lawyer, claiming that we were emb@rr@ssing him and restr!cting his freedom of movement just because he was invited to explain why he was asking for the password.

We did a petition to NUPRC when the inc!d£nt happened in 2024. NUPRC did an investigation. They asked questions, but they didn’t make any arrests.

At a point, they backed out and told me the company said his disappearance was myst£r!0us and they didn’t know what happened. Till date, they haven’t said anything again..."

PETE EDOCHIE: THE LONGEST ACTING CAREER? MY PERSPECTIVE

Pa Pete Edochie is a name too large for my modest vocabulary to contain; an entity so towering that my finest sentence will still fall short of his true worth; an institution so monumental that he has earned, by sheer weight of years and craft, the right to stand before anyone and declare, "I am indeed whom I claim to be."

And YES, I agree with him, in terms of aura and gravitas, there are very few living Nigerian actor that can match his intimidating presence. Pa Pete is naturally endowed with a stature that can conveniently bully almost anyone placed in his frame, and without trying, simply by being there. He is that blessed.

And in interpretation of roles, no true lover of this craft can deny Pa Pete his flowers. The prestige, the splendor, the sheer command with which he breathes life into elder statesmen on screen, wedded to an impeccable grasp of the English tongue and an elegant, unshaken pride in his Igbo heritage - I have not seen his equal among the living. That much must be acknowledged.

I also handsomely understand and appreciate his reasons for engaging in self-adulation. In the past decade, every tom, dick and harry goes on TV to claim their seniority over the much revered thespian, even where and when it is absolutely unnecessary.

First it was KOK, who shrank the entire history of Nigerian theatre into the frame of Living in Bondage and crowned himself above Pa Pete. Then came Mr. Yemi Solade, dragging Pa Pete's name into conversations even when he was nowhere near the object of discourse. Entirely needless.

So, lest his colleagues begin to confuse his silence for admission of surbodinateship, he felt the justifiable urge to set the records straight. And in setting straight those records, he established that the Nigerian theatre's history stretches long before the era of home video, for there would be no Nollywood at all if the stage and the traveling theatre had not first laid its foundation.

And it is precisely in this record-setting that I must, with respect, say the elder has erred.

Shall I Begin?

Pa Pete tells us he first appeared on stage in 1965, a boy of fifteen, and on this basis alone lays claim to seniority over every actor yet drawing breath. I say, with the deepest respect an elder is owed, that he is mistaken - and I believe honestly so.

First of all, as a 15 year old boy, he clearly didn't acquire a degree in theater arts at that young age and it doesn't appear as though he learnt through apprenticeship.

Whatever Pa Pete recalls as his "first stage appearance" was, in all likelihood, no more than a child's play - the kind many young boys performed acting the devil in a church drama, not the disciplined craft of a trained thespian.

A boy summoned to stand among extras does not thereby become a professional, except he can produce the certificate or name the theatre group under whose tutelage he trained.

Conversely, Pa Lere Paimo - Baba Eda Onile Ola, joined the Oyin Adejobi theatre group in 1960, learning the very rudiments of this profession, and by 1961 had already risen to become one of the most significant figures in the Duro Ladipo Theatre group, touring stages across the nation and beyond our borders.

And then comes Alhaji Kareem Adepoju, Baba Wande, whose professional career began in 1962. Then Oga Bello, in 1964. And the list continues - names whose professional record predates Pa Pete's, even if we generously accept his inaccurate account of 1965 as fact.

But yes - we must still concede him this: he carries a stature none can deny, and he remains, without contest, one of my personal all-time greats. And among actors of Igbo extraction, there is indeed none whose professional record predates his.

But the Yoruba must not be added to that reckoning - for we are the pioneers of this craft. And no matter how early a child arrives at the farm, he will meet the stump already standing there.
