I’m sorry, but the more I look at this Bruno Fernandes Player of the Year decision, the less sense it makes.

People keep screaming “21 ASSISTS!” as if that automatically ends the discussion.

Bruno wasn’t even playing at this level for the entire season. His season exploded in the second half he registered 12 assists in 16 league games after Michael Carrick took over.

And here’s the part nobody wants to mention: 11 of his 21 assists came from set piece situations.

ELEVEN.

So we are seriously saying a player whose biggest numbers were heavily boosted by corners and set pieces, and whose best spell came in the latter part of the campaign, was unquestionably the best footballer across a 38 game Premier League season?

Meanwhile Haaland scored 27 goals, won the Golden Boot and finished with more goal involvements.

Arsenal WON the league and had players producing performances throughout the campaign.

Even Igor Thiago scored 22 league goals for Brentford.

Bruno deserved the Playmaker award. Absolutely. He broke the assist record.

But Player of the Year should mean the BEST player across the season, not “who finished with the prettiest assist number”.

At this rate, give Lamine Yamal the Golden Glove next season as well.
