In both cases, you have a known exposure, and if you lose then you leave with experience.
This model is very attractive to venture capital, which offsets the losses from the majority of investments by backing a few that bring back high multiples of money.

The term 'moonshot' was coined by commercial tech.
The idea is to be super ambitious with your goal because that offers a huge potential financial upside.
You're more likely to fail due to the increased risks that come with ambition; chiefly, failure of the tech to be viable.

It's a calculated gamble.
For a startup, failure means stopping trading and (for a committed entrepreneur) starting again.
If you're a skunkworks in an org (e.g. Google), you might either discover the next fundamental shift or just close the project and move resources elsewhere
