Please see below in response to your inquiry on the letter from Sen. Durbin and Congressman Raskin.

BLUF: The accusations within the letter are completely false.

Detailed bullet point responses to each are below, attributable to FBI Spox:

1) The purchase of BMW Armored Vehicles

•     These vehicles had already been purchased by the State Department, sitting idle and unused in their warehouse. The FBI purchased the vehicles from the State Department. 

•     Two of our armored suburbans used for the protective detail fleet were experiencing significant maintenance issues & needed to be replaced – based on assessment of career FBI officials

•     FBI procured two armored BMW’s which are significantly less expensive – saving over $1 million each – vs. the alternative (armored suburbans).
o     [Saving $270k per vehicle + canceled suburban contract of nearly $2M.]

2) Travel regulations and reimbursement

•     By the letter’s own admission, the Director is a “Required Use Traveler” of an official government aircraft on travel. The FBI Director - and other senior government officials - are prohibited from flying on commercial aircraft. 

•     These officials are mandated by law and policy, for national security reasons, to travel via a government-sanctioned aircraft based on operational needs, security requirements, and response capabilities.  

•     ALL travel is fully consistent with Executive Branch requirements and policies that extend over decades across all Administrations. FBI Director Patel has reimbursed ALL personal travel and expenses, strictly following the Office of Management and Budget rules, in the exact same manner as all previous FBI Directors - and is fully compliant. 

•     Furthermore, FBI Director Patel has made just a fraction of the personal trips annually compared to prior FBI Directors. 

o     Director Patel made 11 trips to his personal residence in 2025—a 41.3% reduction per year compared to former Director Christopher Wray’s tenure and a 38.9% decrease per year compared to former Director James Comey’s tenure. Former Director Wray made over 122 trips to his personal residences in Georgia and New York during his tenure, averaging 15 personal trips a year. Roughly 61 of those trips were made via Ronald Reagan National Airport (DCA), costing the taxpayers almost $300,000. Former Director Comey made over 70 trips to his residence in New York during his 3.5-year tenure and 42 of those trips were made via DCA, costing taxpayers more than $190,000. If those trips had been rerouted via Joint Base Andrews, as was done with Director Patel’s travel, taxpayers would have saved nearly $500,000.

•     Director Patel also took fewer personal days than his predecessors 

o     Patel took just 16 personal days in 2025, a 47% reduction per year compared to Director Comey and a 54% reduction per year compared to Director Wray. Additionally, Director Patel has taken significantly fewer holidays with just nine days in 2025, a 47% decrease from the number of holidays taken by Director Comey and a 40% decrease from the number of holidays taken by Director Wray.

•     Additionally, Director Patel’s own policy choice to use government airfields has saved the FBI millions 

o     Prior FBI Directors primarily utilized DCA, which has a landing fee of $4,526 for trips to and from the National Capital Region. Former FBI Director Wray made 772 trips with the FBI plane over the course of 7.5-year tenure, and more than two-thirds of those trips were taken through DCA. Former FBI Director Comey made nearly 500 trips with the FBI plane over the course of his 3.5-year tenure and half of those trips were taken through DCA. Had those flights been re-routed through other regional airfields, the taxpayers would have saved roughly $3.5 million over the course of former Directors Comey and Wray’s tenures, as other airfields do not charge a landing fee per flight.
