PICARD: Data, shields up
DATA: Brilliant! Shields can reduce damage we sustain. Not immunity. Not hubris. Just prudence. It's not precaution—it's strategy.

WORF: HULL BREACHES ON NINE DECKS
DATA: Here's what happened: you told me to raise shields, and I didn't

With the Andes hantavirus outbreak generating significant media coverage, I want to reassure Albertans that the risk in our province remains very low. There were no Albertans onboard the MV Hondius cruise ship.
Unlike other jurisdictions, only two Albertans were potentially exposed while travelling on a flight. They remain healthy, symptom-free, and are isolating at home, with health officials checking in daily. Anyone else considered low risk has been contacted and is monitoring for symptoms.
It is important to remember that person-to-person transmission of this virus has only been documented following prolonged close contact. There is no evidence that asymptomatic individuals can spread the virus to others. While the risk in Alberta remains very low, we will continue monitoring the situation closely to help protect Albertans.
process for process sake is insanity. a case in point of how this plays out in Ontario's health system:
> today, I needed to renew a medication for my son 2 days before the renewal date because we're going out of town
> can't make a request for an early refill online, so i call the pharmacy and ask. i wait 12 minutes on hold before my call is picked up.
> the pharmacist tells me no, they can't do that. they must FAX the prescribing doctor and ask permission. yes, you read that right... a fax must be sent. for releasing a Rx 2 days early. in 2026.
> I say this is silly. ask for other options. they say no. but then they also tell me that if they don't hear from the doctor by the end of the day, they will release it early anyway.... i point out that makes no sense but am told to follow the process
> they also tell me that, in addition to them sending a fax, I must call the doctor to give them a heads up it's coming.
> I call the doctor's office. wait 8 minutes on hold. inform them the fax is coming. am told the doctor won't be in until 230pm and that I should call back around 3pm to "confirm they got the message"...
> so at this point ... I'm spending time reminding a doctor's office to remind a doctor to approve a fax that is required, but not actually required, to refill a prescription 2 days early.
people have probably spent at least 2 hours collectively on this problem today 🤯
no wonder we have a productivity crisis in this country

New public alert for potential measles exposure in the Edmonton zone.

This is an Alberta Emergency Alert. The City of Calgary has issued a water supply alert.
This alert is in effect for all communities of Calgary’s water supply, including Airdrie, Strathmore, Tsuu T’ina Nation and Chestermere.
A feeder main break along 16 Avenue Northwest has impacted the city’s water supply. Supply levels remain in a critical state, affecting the city’s ability to provide water to communities and ensure adequate water is available for firefighting.
All residents and businesses must conserve water. Reduce indoor water consumption as much as possible.
Limit showers and flushing toilets.
Only do full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine.

A belief that really solidified for me this year is that if you are a romantic, and want to see the world full of magic and love, you have to create it.
Host the dinner party, send the flowers, write the note, share the compliment, put up the decorations, plan the outing, so on and so forth.
The default state of life is decay. To create a world that is warm and wonderful and one you and others want to participate in, you really have to work at it.
The good news is, it doesn't take that much work at all.

“Think not of the books you’ve bought as a ‘to be read’ pile. Instead, think of your bookcase as a wine cellar. You collect books to be read at the right time, the right place, and the right mood.”
