Father of two kids, each with multiple allergies including dairy, egg, wheat, barley, rye, tree nuts, sesame and some other seeds. Let’s talk about it.
I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but it's the little comments that make a kid feel different. Calling a dairy-filled cookie a "normal cookie" while my kid eats a dairy-free, safe, cookie tells her she is not having a "normal" experience. #foodallergies#parenting
Such a disappointing move by @WholeFoods . All the hot dog buns now have sesame powder. So damn lazy. Instead of cleaning the facility to remove sesame you just throw it in there and put sesame in the “Contains”statement. You have all the means to be better than this. #allergy
Well. My wife stumbled upon the best possible location for a hotel for our family with multiple #foodallergies. Literally ON TOP of the Whole Foods!! Now we just need a pharmacy for extra Zyrtec and Aquaphor on the adjacent block. Am I right??!?
"Will they ever outgrow their allergies?" Oh the joy of this question..... #foodallergies#parenting
... And no. If I could see the future I'd be way to busy on my yacht to have this conversation...
US folks. Is it me or are companies adding sesame as an ingredient out of pure laziness and legal safety? Safe foods for our family now have sesame shoved on to the end of the ingredient list. Come on people. Just put in the work to prevent cross contamination!! #foodallergies
Our wheat allergic child started Kindergarten and we were, are, stressed! Our teacher is AMAZING. A few more minutes of her time/effort produced a safe/inclusive environment. Some people really get it! #foodallergies#Teachers#Heroes
Trust your allergy radar. If the situation doesn't feel right, trust your radar instead of the ice cream shop worker who "triple checked" the cone being gluten-free. It wasn't. And deep down I knew it. I trusted him over my gut. Never again. Epi-pens are magic! #foodallergies
@heyrashmi@united@Delta@AmericanAir@SouthwestAir I had the exact same thought. I was laughing that some developer was probably annoyed to hard code a peanut module vs making it generalized for all allergies. It was @Delta.
Can I vent real quick? Better #foodallergies observance by big companies is a great start, don't get me wrong. But we also can't forget that allergies do not just come down to a single ingredient. Here is a little modified version of my flight check-in screen.
Gonna take my son (egg, wheat allergic) for ice cream later. Called to confirm they have gluten free cones and flavors are egg free. Sweetening the deal with a little secret store of sprinkles so he can have toppings like everybody else. #foodallergies#thelittlethings
The holy grail: Finding a new, #foodallergies SAFE, food the kids actually enjoy.
We are so happy and assume the kids will want to eat this food every day for the rest of their lives and our food challenges are SOLVED!
The reality: They are kids. They now refuse that food. 🫤
This little pan…. I hope every day the kids can have these ingredients. But buying this allergen-only cookware (and separate spatula and sponge) is bringing some mental health self-care to their parents.
The D-Day invasion of Normandy. My daughter’s first sleepover outside of our house. Both entailed hours of planning and anxiety-filled days leading up to the big event. Both wildly successful.
#planning#foodallergies
It’s the weekend. Birthday parties are back. My hero wife is baking a cake so our son gets a sweet treat too. And also bringing our own pizza. The same fun with a s*#! ton more work. #parenting with #foodallergies
At this point, my kids must assume @Zyrtec can also change a flat tire, complete their homework, and prevent every possible known health issue. #foodallergies#ifonly
Find friends that will serve your kids with #foodallergies dinner in a safe, inclusive way. What seems ordinary and easy to most people seems like a truly special evening. Parents take the night off from worry and the kids can just be kids with their friends.
Ok... (deep breath) ..... halloween is over. Candy audited and sorted successfully. Kids' emotional states intact. Done. A return to some normalcy for a couple of weeks before the holiday anxiety starts. #foodallergies
