I saw this & it reminded me of topics discussed in class regarding body “trends” over time. Diminishing people’s bodies as being attractive based on societal perspectives is harmful & can lead to disordered thinking.

A recent re-watch of Dumplin' on Netflix made me think about how this cycle exists specifically in the (white) American South; where the contradictions between food traditions and body ideals are so starkly apparent. I am a child of Dolly and so I think even she would agree...
#TheDolphinPAC the vicious cycle created by the fast-food industry and the weight-loss industry, in order to maximize profit and body dissatisfaction; warrants its own Lorax-esque tale of foreboding. But that could just be my opinion.
#TheDolphinPAC I can't help but think about the documentary my PH 101 class was shown on the prevalence of T2 Diabetes on Native American reservations. The doc said 50% of people living on reservations would develop T2D. This is not a coincidence, its a slow, creeping genocide.
A favorite moment from this semester was during one a class discussion, when someone brought up the trend of certain Trump critics to make blatant fat-jokes. It was the kind of nuanced and thoughtful conversation that makes me glad I went to college. #TheDolphinPAC

@baculpo_tehani This!!! Is a very important point. I realize now that what I meant to ask was if you've seen an increase in heavier male models in the mainstream proportional to the "plus-size" trend among femme models? But as you noted, the male gaze is a major influence in either case
#TheDolphinPAC The recent increase of "plus-sized" femme models implies maybe our culture has begun expanding its definition of "acceptable female bodies". If so, would you say that this has also been the case for media/marketing targeted towards men? What makes you think so?
@KillianLynch Of course I mean what’s deemed as an acceptable body size for women is dependent on what men find attractive. Being “thic” is only acceptable now because being curvy is the new trend. You can see it in songs, movies, etc. #TheDolphinPAC
@olivia_o13 SUCH a good question! I'd say it'd be context specific. (Like if a 4.5 said they felt fat and a 3.1 said they were way fatter than the 4.5, it might benefit the latter's rating. But, as when a fat person engages in fat talk, the inverse might harm them socially) #TheDolphinPAC
Do you guys think that, in relation to the Nosedive episode of Black Mirror that we watched, people would be judged/rated lower if they used “fat talk” about themselves? Or do you think they would use it as a way to make people pity them?🤔 #TheDolphinPAC
@nc97116 @jess_serikawa This!!! Anyone else watch F.R.I.E.N.D.S. in high school and have that thought, "Oh cool. Nice to know my body is/could be a punchline". I guess that's why I never asked where other the fat characters were... (Although I frequently wondered where all the POC were)
@jtanthro Thx for sharing! I've seen Noom ads calling it a "lifestyle change" app that can help you "reach your health goals" but I think it just goes to show, companies will say anything to draw in the most people. Just bc I can't see weight bias doesn't mean its not there #TheDolphinPAC
Just wanted to say that I appreciated the connection Seema made on Flipgrid between the tendency for girls to feel forced to reciprocate "fat talk" in order to avoid seeming conceited, and the tendency for womxn to avoid any positive self-talk for fear of the same #TheDolphinPac
#TheDolphinPAC Although I found this week's readings to be harder for me on an emotional level, they were quite a treat for my gender studies brain. It was fascinating to learn from the Taylor piece the different ways weight-based teasing & reactions occurred among diff. genders
#TheDolphinPAC While I'm here promoting my fav fat icons, go follow @lovaeij on IG & sub to her YouTube channel! She not only challenges fatphobia in the fashion and modelling industries, she also discusses fat/queer pleasure regularly. (and is fab & has a very cute Dutch accent)
Hey #TheDolphinPAC , last week's "Weighty Subjects" brought up the misconception about exercise being linked to weight loss (as opposed to fitness). This reminded me of @300lbsandrunnin ! Martinus is a fit af fat man that preaches active lifestyles for everyone. Check him out!
Hi, I'm Killian! (she/they) I'm taking Food, Fat, and Fitness for several reasons. The primary reason being that I'm fed up with the terrible treatment of fat people and fatness in our culture, and the ways anti-fat culture pits us all against our own bodies. #TheDolphinPAC
