Thinking about the double standards between men and women and how that correlates with body image-if this picture was of ppl who identify as male, would it have the same shock value?

@Hannah40715302 @MariaR03924831 Here’s the clip of Taylor Swift talking about her struggles w an eating disorder & attempts at achieving impossible body standards: https://t.co/v6YKkv8iAu
I think it’s really important that celebrities speak up about these issues bc in the end, we’re all human!❤️ #TheDolphinPAC
I’ve seen a lot of ads for weight loss services (Noom 👀) recently which makes me feel conflicted, especially since we are in the holiday season where food is a main part of most celebrations. While these ads are aimed to encourage, I find them somewhat demeaning? #TheDolphinPAC
Where did the mentality of the “thin ideal” originate? Has it always been there and just exacerbated by the media? This would require a deep dive into history but it’s interesting to think about how much we have *really* changed (if at all) in our standards. #TheDolphinPAC
Another relevant graphic: weight stigma is especially prevalent in settings associated w “fitness.” Ppl don’t take into account the other factors that may contribute to a person’s weight i.e. genetics, mental health, etc.

@pacificuanthro Interesting! This reminds me of the discussion we had regarding capitalism & limiting access for ppl who depend on resources such as drive-thrus. While the intention may be aimed at curbing obesity, it simultaneously hurts lower income communities. #TheDolphinPAC
@DenizJulie Really interesting point! I think at some point (if technology hadn’t advanced to how it is today) ppl would still find things wrong about their body based on perception/other ppl but leads to the question of how “healthy” behaviors/ideals were engrained in society #TheDolphinPAC
@pacificuanthro I totally agree Natalie! I have become a lot more conscious of fat rep & discourse across my social media-it can be both enlightening and disheartening sometimes to see how nasty ppl can be to others & come to conclusions so fast just based on a person’s body :/ #TheDolphinPAC
@jtanthro It’s so interesting to see how shows like Parks and Rec bring in prevalent issues such as the “soda tax”. Also considering that the main motive is humor, it makes you think about the role that fatness plays in the media-just the butt of the joke in most cases. #TheDolphinPAC
I saw this & it reminded me of topics discussed in class regarding body “trends” over time. Diminishing people’s bodies as being attractive based on societal perspectives is harmful & can lead to disordered thinking.

@AndrewLiberato I agree! As young people I feel as if we’re constantly caught up in our heads surrounding what others perceive about us - & during PE especially we’re exposing ourselves physically which can be difficult when you are self conscious about your body/health. #TheDolphinPAC
I would be really curious to understand more about how social media has impacted the culture/perpetuation of fat talk. Is the constant accessibility of media & glorification of the “ideal” body making self-acceptance harder or creating room for more perspectives? #TheDolphinPAC
@DenizJulie It’s so interesting to see how body size goes in and out of fashion like a “trend” but also differs depending on culture. From the Fraser reading it was also stated that sick people of high status were considered “fashionably ill” in the 18th-19th centuries! #TheDolphinPAC
The idea of “relentless self-surveillance” of bodily conscious individuals in the reading by Taylor really resonated w me. I feel like this concept has been so ingrained in society, especially for young people & am curious as to experiences others might have w it. #TheDolphinPAC
Do you guys think that, in relation to the Nosedive episode of Black Mirror that we watched, people would be judged/rated lower if they used “fat talk” about themselves? Or do you think they would use it as a way to make people pity them?🤔 #TheDolphinPAC
It’s been really interesting to see the correlation between environmental studies & fat studies. It’s all so interconnected in that food inequities/availability due to climate inherently affect the nutrition & “health” of communities who cannot afford/access food. #TheDolphinPAC
hi folks! my name is Olivia (she/her) & i’m a sophomore from NorCal. i’m intending on double majoring in anthro & dance - taking this course for anthro req. & am looking forward to learning more about the culture surrounding body image! #TheDolphinPAC
