One day, your home will be empty, and someone will have to decide what to do with your things. They'll open your drawers. They'll find the watch you treasured so much, the car you spent three years paying off, and the clothes you saved for special occasions because you didn't want to wear them out. And they'll make three piles: what to sell, what to give away, and what to throw away. None of it goes with you. Not a single thing. The only thing that goes with you is that afternoon you stayed talking for hours and didn't even realize where the time went. The look on your mom's face when you showed up to visit her without telling her you were coming. Don't collect things... Collect moments with the people you love
This country has agreed on almost nothing in a decade. We agreed on her.
I tried to write this yesterday and couldn’t find a container big enough to hold it. Because the grief wasn’t just mine. It came from every direction at once, from people I’ve argued with across a chamber and across a dinner table, in the same key and at the same depth as the people I love most in this world.
Last night I sat in a church, a room full of neighbors working on something hard, and the woman running the meeting opened with a Dolly quote and closed with another one. Nobody thought it was strange. It was a language everybody in the room already spoke. Then this morning the King’s Guard marched into the forecourt at Buckingham Palace and played “9 to 5” for a girl born in a one-room cabin in the Smokies.
That was her magic. Dolly could stand in the middle of a divided country and somehow nobody was standing across from her. She made people feel seen, not flattered, seen. She handed you back your own dignity like you’d dropped it and she just happened to notice. She didn’t threaten people. She moved them.
It’s the same instinct that made her give away books. She understood what most powerful people never figure out: a child’s world is only as wide as what they’ve been given to imagine. So, she sent hundreds of millions of books to kids who’d never been handed a thing that was theirs alone. That isn’t charity. That’s horizon. A child who reads about the ocean starts believing there’s a version of her life that reaches it. My kids got those books. They know who they came from, and they love her for it.
They grew up on her, too. When Jack was a baby, “9 to 5” was the sound of our mornings, how we got him fed and dressed and out the door. Though some mornings that song wasn’t for him at all. It was for two exhausted parents who needed somebody to promise them the day was survivable. The same song that moved a toddler here in Guilford County was played outside a palace today. That’s not celebrity. That’s closer to grace.
And it’s why this one hurts. We’re living through a stretch where hope feels naive, love feels partisan, and a good laugh feels like something we misplaced. She was all three at once, and she never asked us to earn them first. She never asked us to agree with her. She never asked us to be anything other than what we were.
Dolly, you didn’t just make the world a better place. You made humanity move itself. Toward more hope. More laughs. More love.
We will always remember you.
And, we will always love you.
Here's a story I did not know about Dolly Parton until now. When she left the Porter Wagoner Show, Wagoner sued her for breach of contract, and she eventually settled it with him. Years later he fell into financial distress, so he sold the publishing rights to his music to an anonymous buyer in order to raise cash to pay off his debts.
As you can guess, the anonymous buyer was actually Dolly Parton. And what she did next was all Dolly. She gave him back the rights to his music catalog as a gift. She never held a grudge. I guess that's why Pat Boone called her the purest person he ever knew.
Fully crying…all the love to Stella and the entire Parton family 🙏
"My sister was always thinking of others, and if you want to honor her legacy, show more kindness, lift others up, and give more of your time and resources, as she continued to do to the very end."
Just boarded my flight in Nashville and the whole @SouthwestAir plane is lit up pink, with @DollyParton playing loud on the speakers as we board. 🦋💝 #Dolly
