Just stumbled upon this simple trick in After Effects:

If you don't want to overthink figuring out a complex formula, simply use a bunch of Null layers to control the Position Animators of a Text layer and you can quickly build interesting shapes without digging into any math.

I actually find it super handy to project a 2D position onto a 3D surface in After Effects via fromCompToSurface(). Nice way to control layer effects with only the transform XYZ properties.
