It used to be that 22% of college students majored in education.
In 2018, those numbers were at 4.6%! 😮
Current numbers are at 3.3%! 😨
Instead of figuring out why and doing something about it, states and districts are lowering the requirements for becoming a teacher. 🙄😕😡
Important reminder to all school admin: You work for your staff-not the other way around. If you pull into your school every day thinking everyone works for YOU, you’re in the wrong position.
A simple leadership tip: Students work hardest for teachers they like and respect. It's the same for teachers and admin and it's needed for a strong culture!
If it can be simplified, then simplify it. There is no virtue that comes with complexity and no advantage gained from it either.
Complexity destroys understanding, execution, confidence, and the willingness to change. Simplicity improves and accelerates them.
I can tell if a school has effective admin within minutes of walking into the school. I watch the office staff, custodians & faculty interact in the hall, their demeanor & interactions w/other staff & students. It's true everyone impacts culture, but Leadership is the thermostat!
This week I had what I thought was a great idea for the staff. One of my Assistant Principals told me it wasn’t the right time.
It’s not enough for an idea to be good. It has to be the right time.
Leaders…it’s important to have people around you who will tell you this stuff.
When we share credit & highlight the contributions of others, we create an environment built around empowerment, which in turn encourages people to go above & beyond in an effort to help the greater good.
This year… and every other year… administrators would do well to care more about the well being of their teachers than they do about their plans for professional development of those teachers.
But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.”
