My time with @InvincibleVS has come to end as I was impacted by layoffs today. Getting to work on a fighting game, for an IP like Invincible, was an unbelievable experience that I am extremely grateful to have had.
Im not sure what Ill be doing next, but if anyone has an immediate need for a Senior Combat Designer on a fighting game, you better grab me before I get distracted with some other hobby 😆
Getting to work on Rex, Robot, DupliKate, and the final DLC character in year 1 was such a fulfilling experience. Learning the process of translating a character from my mind to the game was such a rewarding challenge. I loved trying to push the envelope for what was in the game. For Rex, I added wall jumps and runs to the system. For Robot, I actually had dual modes with different movesets and robot drones that eventually got scrapped. DupliKate was by far my favorite though, as figuring out how her clones were going to be used and absorbed without going over the hardware budgets was extremely challenging, not to mention giving her an install super.
My favorite moment of development though was definitely getting to implement the damage scaling system. The game had such a unique combo system that traditional damage scaling didn’t really fit, so figuring out a formula that actually fit the system was awesome lot of fun.
I also got to design the training mode and always advocated for longer combos whether it be via boost dash cancelling, specials refreshing, lowering combo meter via active assists etc.
I got my degree in Computer Science because I wanted to work in the video game industry and after two decades of competing, strategy guide authoring, esports commentating, and content creating, I finally got to add Combat Designer to the list and ship a title. Bucket list item checked ✅
I learned so much at this job and had so much fun with my coworkers. I got to partake in publisher pitch meetings with Playstation and Xbox, and even got to visit Epic Games HQ! Tons of press interviews at both Gamescom in Germany and Brazil. The amount I learned about the industry in general over these two years was incredible.
Until whatever next happens for me, come hang out on my Twitch channel to keep up! Also, the next 2 characters coming out for Invincible VS should be absolutely ridiculous! (Last one is my final character and that character is designed to be insane!)
For me, this is already a story from a career that spans the past 31 years.
I’m probably one of the people in the game industry who has traveled to the largest number of countries and actually met local fan communities in person. So honestly, I’ve been influenced by people and cultures from all over the world. More than race itself, I think I’ve always been influenced by “regional culture” and “organizational culture.”
One of the most fascinating moments involving your culture happened in 2019, when I revealed Leroy Smith. (The visual design wasn’t mine, but the original character concept was.)
Right after the reveal, I received this message from the American fan community:
“Can we… can we invite you to the cookout for making an awesome character like this?”
Now, as someone from my generation in Japan, I was actually considered relatively good at reading and writing English. By then I’d already been to North America over 50 times, had maintained the English I learned for university entrance exams, and had been communicating with people on Twitter in English long before translation apps became useful, let alone AI translation.
But honestly… when I saw that sentence, I had absolutely no idea what it meant.
In fact, my very first reaction was:
“Oh no… I’m finished.”
Here’s why.
Back then I was frequently arguing against articles spreading hate toward video games, and I kept seeing people replying with the word “cooked.”
As you know, “cooked” can mean you’re done, finished, or completely destroyed. I also often saw “roasted.” Because of that, I honestly assumed “cookout” was just an even stronger version of “cooked.”
So for one terrifying moment, I read it as:
“Hey… we… we… can invite you to a party where we’re going to beat you up and roast you?”
Even though I thought I knew America pretty well, I genuinely wondered if I’d somehow pressed some invisible cultural button that I wasn’t supposed to touch.
Later, I had another misunderstanding. People kept calling me:
“You are the fxxking GOAT.”
And for about two or three years I honestly thought,
“Damn… here’s another guy calling me ‘a fxxking goat… this animal bastard.’ Better ignore the bait.”
Some people even replied with 🐐 emojis, so I genuinely believed they were insulting me by calling me an animal.
Because of misunderstandings like that, I seriously thought:
“Man… getting our characters accepted by Americans is really difficult. They might actually be even more sensitive than Japanese people in many ways. We need to study their culture much more.”
Anyway, back to the cookout story.
Eventually someone explained that a “cookout” in the African American community is actually one of the highest compliments possible—basically saying:
“You’re someone we’d trust enough to invite to our close-knit family BBQ, where only real friends and loved ones are welcome.”
That explanation was a huge relief.
Then they started showing me BBQ equipment and ingredients…
…and I was absolutely shocked that everything was several times bigger than what we have in Japan.
Sure, I expected the smoker grills to be huge. But even the tongs and spatulas were enormous, and the meat looked like something I’d only ever seen as loot in an MMORPG.
Looking back now, I honestly regret not immediately flying to the U.S. and accepting an invitation to one of those community cookouts.
That really was the perfect opportunity.
Anyway… I’ve wandered way off topic.
Of course I can’t claim that I fully understand what you call Black culture. But if we’re talking about the parts that have genuinely influenced me, the cookout story is certainly one of them.
And the people in these photos have also had a significant influence on me. (I’d like to include many more, but I’ll limit it to four photos.)
@ward314_ward@ID_AA_Carmack Productions have simply scaled with consumer expectations and broader competition.
The video game industry has been on a 30+ years long Boom cycle. This sucks but this Bust is probably long overdue.
Bryan,
I’m trying to be nice here. I don’t know you and I’m sorry you’re facing this diagnosis. But what I have observed from you over the last decade is someone who has a lot of health anxiety
Anxiety and psychological stress are very highly tied to autoimmune disorders. I would absolutely try to get medical professionals to help you heal
But I feel what you are doing now is more symptoms of what may be the root problem. I could be completely wrong but I would encourage you to consider a more holistic approach that also considers the biopsychosocial model of these disease
I hope you are able to heal from this

People in my stream may have been aware yesterday, but while I was doing the Road to OTB Finals, after my first match I got the news that my Nan passed away that evening. It was hard to stay strong. It really feels like the end of an era with both my grandparents gone now.
Outside doing WHAT EXACTLY????
New York is in the process of being burnt to the ground,
And yet here we have the “hero” dressed like a Knicks fan standing on top of a taxi in the middle of Manhattan like he’s the Grand Marshal of a parade NOBODY approved of!!!
