The Politics Dept has 42 students studying UK, US politics and political ideas. They work hard, enjoy the subject, argue a lot and results are excellent!
Watching CNN and the countdown to the electoral college vote counting in Congress and Georgia Senate race results. Sense a momentous day and start of road back to decency, democracy and recovery for the USA. The world needs it after authoritarian’s run of success in recent years.
The US? OMG is the mild response. Trump trying to coerce a Georgia official into changing election result. Sens. Cruz and Hawley aiming to challenge electoral college result. 10 exDefence Secs appeal for military not to get involved in election. Talk of coup attempt by Trump. 😱
2021 starts with so much. UK EU deal done and Johnson pulls it out once again (Brexit referendum; Leadership win; Election triumph 2019; Brexit 2020). Like him or not, he is a transformational leader. Marr’s barely disguised hostility showed how hostile many in the media are.
Brexit deal or no deal?? Trump’s spurious legal challenges to the election?? Pandemic human and economic costs and race for vaccination?? Seems 2020 will end in a really 2020 way.
Where are we today? Trump begins to concede. His legal team in disarray. Cases thrown out; lawyers ejected for peddling conspiracy theories even Giuliani couldn’t stomach. If election ‘stolen’, how come Dems overlooked winning more House seats and taking the Senate? 🤔 #Biden46.
Boris back. Stage 2 of battle. End of the beginning. Charismatic leadership and reclamation of authority evident. Collapse of presidential authority in US a major contrast. Is the person? Is it just circumstance? Is it the system that produced this difference? 🤔
The utilitarian philosopher Jeremy Bentham’s autoicon is now permanently on public display at UCL. Check out why his body ended up on display - principle, protest, disciple worship - and why he probably would have objected. #thinkingschool
This week the UK leaves the EU after 3 1/2 years of political, party, public, parliamentary, electoral & legal struggle that redefined the UK. Remain lost despite a huge rearguard fight. Leave won. Little physical violence. A polite & commercial British people may continue.
A momentous election result with Tory majority of 80. Labour lost, making no momentum and going backwards in traditional working class Labour strongholds. Seems new left metropolitan identity politics did not appeal to old Labour voters. #whatdoesborisdonext
Democracy is about giving people what they want. This election may be about giving it to people pretty hard. We’ll see. Allnighter definitely planned. #decisionorindecisionday. #thinkingschool
