Bangladeshi national kidnapped in Johannesburg:

A Bangladeshi national, identified as Tanvir Ahmed, was kidnapped outside a restaurant in Fordsburg, Johannesburg.

According to members of the local Bangladeshi community, Ahmed had arrived in South Africa only 2–3 months ago.

Mpumalanga Police are investigating a suspected staged kidnapping involving a 27-year-old professional soccer player after evidence suggested the alleged kidnapping may never have occurred.

The player’s family reported him missing on 5 July 2026, claiming he had been kidnapped after receiving a ransom demand from an unknown caller using the player’s cellphone.

SAPS immediately launched an investigation and deployed detectives to trace him.

Later that same day, the player returned home unharmed. Subsequent investigations reportedly found that no ransom had been paid and that the alleged kidnapping may have been fabricated.

Police are now considering charges, including defeating the ends of justice. Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General (Dr) Zeph Mkhwanazi warned that false crime reports waste valuable police resources and divert officers from responding to genuine emergencies.

#sapsFS [KIDNAPPING VICTIM RESCUED AND TRIO ARRESTED AFTER THE MAN WAS FOUND INJURED INSIDE THE BOOT OF THEIR VEHICLE]

The vigilance of a community member leads to the arrest of three (3) kidnapping suspects in Bronville. This is after a man was discovered with multiple injuries in the boot of a car they were traveling in.

On Sunday, 28 June 2026, at about 08:00 police received a complaint of fighting in Bronville. On arrival on the scene, members were informed by a community member that there was a person inside the boot of a silver BMW. Members immediately intercepted the identified vehicle with three male occupants and requested to search.

Upon searching the vehicle police found an african male covered in blood. The victim was found with serious multiple injuries, and he had a strong stench of petrol. He was taken to hospital for medical examination and treatment.

Upon further inspection police noticed blood on the suspects' hands and sneakers.

According to information, the suspects assaulted the victim at his home and accused him of stealing their car parts. They allegedly poured him with petrol and forcefully placed him in the boot of their car before driving off with him.

Police confiscated two pairs of blood-stained sneakers and the vehicle alleged to be used in the commission of the crime. The confiscated items were booked in as evidence for further investigations.

The three males aged 25, 27, and 40 were subsequently arrested for attempted murder and kidnapping. They will appear in the Welkom Magistrate's Court soon.

HIJACKED VEHICLE RECOVERED | KIDNAPPED VICTIM SAFELY LOCATED

REPORT:
Following a SaferCity alert received regarding a hijacked vehicle, Blue Hawk Tactical members mobilised alongside tracking partners to the last known location.

The vehicle was successfully located; however, the driver was not with the vehicle at the time of recovery.

Additional role players responded to the scene while efforts continued to locate the victim.

A short while later, the victim was safely located and reunited with family members. No injuries were reported.

The recovered vehicle was handed over to the relevant authorities for further investigation.

A multidisciplinary operation involving the Provincial Anti-Hijacking Task Team and a private security company led to the rescue of two kidnapping victims, the arrest of three suspects, and the recovery of a hijacked Ford Ranger in Kabokweni, Mpumalanga.

Police acted on intelligence following a carjacking and kidnapping incident and traced the suspects to a house in Manyeveni, where the victims were found and safely rescued.

Investigations revealed the suspects allegedly forced one victim to transfer about R86,000 from his bank account and intended extorting more money.

Officers also recovered two prohibited firearms, ammunition and several cellphones during the operation.

The suspects, aged between 28 and 35, face charges including kidnapping, carjacking, armed robbery and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.

The South African Police Service praised members for their swift response in tackling violent crime.

#sapsGP [RIETGAT SAPS ARRESTS FOUR SUSPECTS FOR ROBBERY AND KIDNAPPING CONNECTED TO ONLINE SCAMMING IN SOSHANGUVE]

SAPS Rietgat has made a significant breakthrough in online scamming related crimes. This after they arrested four male suspects aged between 18 and 25 in connection with a robbery and kidnapping case that occurred on 29 May 2026 in Block PP1, Soshanguve.

According to the investigation, the victim responded to a Facebook Marketplace advertisement in which mag rims were allegedly being offered for sale at R3 500. The victim communicated with the alleged seller and was provided with a location in Block PP1, Soshanguve, where the transaction was to take place.

Upon arrival, the victim was approached by a young male who confirmed that they were there to meet the seller. The male then directed the victim to another location nearby where the meeting was alleged to take place and accompanied the victim in the vehicle.

On arrival at the second location, the male exited the vehicle, allegedly to contact the seller. Shortly thereafter, an armed suspect approached the vehicle and instructed the victim to move to the back seat. The decision to grant alleged kidnapping kingpin, Faizel Charloos, bail of R30,000 has sparked renewed scrutiny over how South Africa’s criminal justice system deals with accused organised crime figures.

The latest development comes after a sequence of events that saw Charloos previously lose his bail, a warrant issued for his arrest, and a nationwide manhunt launched after he allegedly absconded from court proceedings,

Charloos had initially been granted bail of between R1 million and R2 million in separate kidnapping-related matters linked to high-profile ransom cases, including the 2022 abduction of a Gauteng businessman.

Authorities have long regarded him as an influential figure in an alleged transnational kidnapping-for-ransom syndicate operating in South Africa.

In April 2025, the Protea Magistrate’s Court revoked his bail after he failed to appear for scheduled proceedings.

Reports at the time indicated that Charloos allegedly fled the court precinct shortly before he was expected to be formally charged in connection with another kidnapping investigation.

The incident triggered a police manhunt, with investigators eventually tracing and rearresting him at a resort near Bela-Bela in Limpopo.

Against that backdrop, the decision to now grant him bail of R30,000 is raising difficult questions about consistency within the justice system and whether enough weight is being placed on concerns around flight risk, witness intimidation, organised crime influence, and public safety.

Some of Charloos’ co-accused confessed to the kidnappings and pleaded guilty and are already serving their sentenced time.

Questions are now being asked on how an accused person who absconded while already out on substantial bail could later secure release on a dramatically reduced amount.

The development has also reignited broader public concern about the handling of kidnapping syndicate cases in South Africa, where ransom-driven abductions targeting businesspeople, foreign nationals, schoolchildren and affluent families have increased significantly in recent years.

Kidnapping operations are often highly sophisticated, financially resourced and capable of moving suspects across provincial and international borders.
It also highlights the growing national concern around kidnapping-for-ransom syndicates, which police and intelligence structures have repeatedly described as one of the fastest-growing organised crime threats facing South Africa.

For many, the central issue is no longer only whether alleged syndicate leaders are arrested, but whether the criminal justice system can keep them behind bars while prosecutions unfold.

In another high-profile case in KZN last year, a suspected trans-national kidnapping suspect had charges against him and suspected members of the syndicate withdrawn. A police officer was among them.

#sapsKZN A suspect who had allegedly #kidnapped a Pakistani businessman in Hluhluwe, was shot and fatally wounded in a shootout with police at Empangeni on Saturday night, 09/50.

The businessman was kidnapped on the morning of 06/05 and a ransom of R200 000 was demanded. On the following day, an amount of R90 000 was paid and the victim was released on condition that the balance would be paid after his freedom was guaranteed.

The Empangeni Tactical Response Team (TRT) initiated an operation and a guided drop-off of the outstanding balance was arranged. On Saturday night, a parcel was dropped on the N2 northbound and three suspects, who were travelling in a bakkie, arrived to pick up the parcel.

The TRT officers confronted the suspects and a shootout ensued. One suspect was shot and fatally wounded at the scene, the second suspect fled into the bushes and disappeared in the darkness, whist the third suspect drove off. The bakkie he was driving was found abandoned on the N2 on-ramp at Empangeni.

A firearm whose serial number was filed off was found in the possession of the deceased suspect. A manhunt for the suspects who evaded arrest is underway. ME
