🧵CONGRESS decided that these funds would lapse on September 30.

CONGRESS decided to grant itself an expedited procedure to consider rescinding funds and told the President to hold the funds while Congress decides whether to rescind.

CONGRESS decided not to limit the time period in which the President can send a rescission.

CONGRESS was told by GAO in 1975 that pocket rescissions are permitted and to amend the text to prevent pocket rescissions.

CONGRESS has amended the ICA several times but has let this provision allowing pocket rescissions to stay in place.

We are just using the system CONGRESS established and never changed despite being told by your own GAO to change it.

We will continue to use the tools CONGRESS provided to save taxpayer dollars from going to (just a few examples):

$567 million for social services for illegal aliens

$15 million in welfare for illegal aliens

$9 million to bail out foreign country climate change policies

$56 million for NGO DEI and race discrimination

Senate Republicans want to lose the Senate. They want to just sit around making deals with Democrats and avoiding any accountability for what happens.

They want an environment where they can cast fake votes that allow them to look like they’re doing the right thing while getting what they want from Democrats—amnesty, ICE defunding, Trump impeachment.

A minority Senate where they can “vote right” but let Democrats get whatever they want is a dream scenario for McConnell and Thune.

Don’t let them let get away with it.

Vote like your continued existence depends on victory. Because it does.

Oh look, Senator Wyden is clutching pearls over Oregon having to actually fund its own expansive Medicaid experiment instead of endless federal blank checks.
That $1.3 billion “bill” isn’t some cartoonish Republican plot to yank coverage from moms and kids. It’s the predictable cost of Oregon’s choice to run one of the most generous systems in the country, including full benefits for non citizens via Healthier Oregon, while Washington finally put some basic adult supervision on the program, work requirements for able bodied adults, six month eligibility checks instead of every two years, and tighter federal matching rules.
You and your side spent years expanding coverage far beyond traditional Medicaid (low income kids, disabled, elderly, pregnant women) into able bodied adults and people who aren’t even U.S. citizens, then act shocked when taxpayers elsewhere stop writing blank checks. Princeton estimates ~200k could lose coverage under the new rules. Funny how the people who scream loudest never mention that a big chunk of the administrative burden and cost pressure comes from Oregon’s deliberate decision to cover non citizens with state dollars while demanding the rest of America subsidize the spillover.
Work requirements and more frequent verification aren’t “brutal cuts.” They’re the bare minimum expectation that able bodied adults contribute something instead of treating Medicaid like a permanent lifestyle. Rural hospitals and providers are feeling the squeeze, because the previous model was unsustainable, not because Republicans suddenly hate sick people.
Keep fighting to “reverse” accountability if you want. Oregonians (and the rest of the country) are allowed to notice that unlimited open ended entitlement for everyone who shows up isn’t the same thing as affordable, accessible care for American citizens who actually need it. 🇺🇸 🐺
