A few have reached out after I posted my 2017 remarks about the involvement of the Ghanaian government in Hajj matters. They want to know about experiences in other countries.

Well, I could write whole articles on it as I have been intrigued by this subject for a while. But here are a few.

1. In Malaysia, a decision to build a dedicated Hajj Airport Terminal attracted similar public interest. The aviation authorities showed that Umrah slots (the lesser Hajj that happens year-round) will contribute considerably to return on investment.

2. The growing practice of building dedicated/special Hajj terminals in airports has led to Saudi construction giant, SATCO, creating a special unit that specialises in this line of work. It is this unit that developed the Hajj terminal at Senegal's new airport, AIBD, for instance.

3. Due to COVID, and the suspension of Hajj for a period, Hyderabad Airport in India suspended use of the special Hajj terminal. Delays in reopening once Hajj resumed sparked a backlash. Hyderabad Airport officials explained that they were exploring how to integrate Hajj services into an existing main terminal.

4. Saudi Arabia is running a pilot where countries that have a dedicated Hajj terminal can also host Saudi immigration officers and have the passport and visa screening happen in the pilgrim's home country. The pilot, however, started with only 8 countries.

5. Is it more sensible to have a dedicated Hajj terminal or to create special services for pilgrims in the main terminals? Answer: it depends on the numbers involved. There are some unique logistical and cultural issues that an Airport needs to consider regardless which model it chooses. For instance, everyone entering Saudi Arabia for Hajj must wear a plain cotton cloth called Ihram. Many changing rooms are often needed to enable pilgrims change into Ihram before they board. It is not always easy to accommodate such needs in regular terminals. Also, the scheduling for accommodation transfer in Saudi can require very long waiting times on the ground in the departure airport meaning that pilgrims stay for many more hours in between scheduled flights than regular passengers. Providing bedding and amenities in normal terminal spaces can be hard.

6. Ghana is not the only country where corruption has often undermined pilgrim welfare. In Indonesia, one Minister was jailed for such acts. He was playing games with the special state fund into which pilgrims pay fees for the government to run the Hajj program. In other countries, fiddling with the quota awarded to citizens by Saudi Arabia is rampant. The Indian Supreme Court once struck down "protocol slots" created by the government for Hajj quota allotments.

In short, there is a lot Ghana can learn from the experiences of other countries in managing this complex process.

At a certain scale, and given the level of a country's sophistication, government involvement may be inevitable for a while. Of course, the risks must be managed like we do with anything that governments touch.

You people hate your fathers. Stop the "he wasn't present" BS

300 level, there was no money at home, I couldn't pay fees or lodge rent. My dad was getting depressed but tried to hide it.

A few days to resumption, he and I drove to his friend's house by 8pm. The man was at a meeting, but we waited till 9/10 thereabouts.

When he was done, he attended to us. I suspected the reason we were there, but it had never happened before and didn't think it would.

My beloved father said to his friend:

"My son will be resuming school next week. For now I don't have any money to send him back. Look at him here. Please lend me xxx amount; I'll repay as soon as I get it. He's in 300 level. He has 2 years to go."

I wept inside because I had to witness my dad borrow money to send me back to school.

A lot of you come to talk bullshit about your dads, about how he didn't bond and other stupid things.

If your fathers had carried you to the places they went to earn, borrow or beg for money, you wouldn't say they didn't turn up for you.

I understand how easy it is to fall into mummy's bosom and never crawl out. But you think provision is just dropping money in accounts and in mummy's lap?

Do you know how that money was gotten? Do you know how many people didn't go to school because their father's died?

Fuck bonding! Fuck being present!!

All I needed from my father was being alive to provide for me. I didn't need him toiling around the house and gisting with me.

Many of my friends lost their fathers at an early age. I was praying everyday for my dad to come back home. That was the only form of presence I needed.

Shame on you if you become successful and abandon your father because of stupid emotional crap. Especially when you're a man.
