The Washington Mystics enter Tuesday's matchup having won six of their last nine games, and Shakira Austin has been the driving force behind their recent surge.

The fifth-year pro is averaging team-highs of (18.0) points, (10.6) rebounds, and (1.8) blocks during that stretch. She has recorded three 20-point performances during the stretch, scoring 21 points in a five-point win over Atlanta, 27 points in a five-point victory over Seattle, and 25 points in the Mystics' most recent win over Las Vegas, where she knocked down the game-tying basket before converting the go-ahead free throw. She also turned in a dominant 15-point, 15-rebound performance in a win over Golden State.

Austin's offensive growth has been evident every season she's been in the league. As a rookie in 2022, she averaged (8.7) points per game. Injuries limited her over the next two seasons, but she still averaged (10.0) points in 19 games in 2023 and (11.8) points in 12 games in 2024.

Last season was her first healthy campaign since her rookie year, as she averaged (12.7) points and (6.4) rebounds. This year, she's elevated her game even further, averaging career highs of (15.0) points, (9.5) rebounds, (2.6) assists, and (1.4) blocks per game. She currently ranks third in the WNBA in rebounding.

One of the biggest reasons for Austin's scoring jump has been the improvement in her shooting. Entering this season, she had made just 3 of her first 20 career three-point attempts (15.0%). Through 25 games, she's already knocked down 12 threes while shooting 35.3% from beyond the arc. She's also getting to the free-throw line more often than ever before and is converting 70.5% of her attempts after never shooting better than 66.7% in a season prior to this year.

Now healthy and playing consistent minutes, Austin is putting together the best season of her career. Her continued development on both ends of the floor is exactly why she was selected with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2022 WNBA Draft, and she's beginning to fully realize that potential.
