[1/2] Yazidi women, who survived sexual violence and bore children from ISIS militants, face an Iraqi law that designates their children Muslim.
Michelle X. Liu , Suchita Uppal, and Kinga Ewa Nastal write that this law further isolates the already persecuted group.
As part of @nadiainitiative#OurWorkIsNotDone campaign, we urge those unfamiliar with the genocide to learn more, in hopes that the stories of survivors will be amplified and materialize in action to honor their bravery and put perpetrators on trial.

Today marks the 10th Anniversary of the Yazidi Genocide, when ISIS invaded the Sinjar region of northern Iraq and began their genocidal campaign against the Yazidi community.
Hundreds of thousands were displaced, and thousands more were murdered.
Against this backdrop and with compelling evidence of ISIS extremists having committed genocide against the Yazidis, there have been only three trials in which ISIS perpetrators have been convicted of genocide to date.
Impunity is complacency. Survivors deserve justice.
On #InternationalJusticeDay, NI recognizes that there's no justice until Yazidi survivors are reunited with their loved ones. A decade in captivity is not justice. Not knowing the fate of relatives or being unable to lay them to rest is not justice.
Yazidis deserve justice.
Yesterday, I had the privilege of attending the unveiling of @nadiainitiative’s memorial: “Mother and Justice”
The sculpture is a testament to the strength and bravery of those who risk everything to share their stories in the pursuit of justice. ⚖️

Over 400 Yazidi-Americans, led by @NadiaMuradBasee, unite in a lawsuit against Lafarge, seeking to hold the company accountable for its support to ISIS as they committed genocide against Yazidis. Represented by Amal Clooney (@DoughtyStPublic) & @LeeWolosky
Today, Amal Clooney filed a groundbreaking lawsuit in a US federal court against French conglomerate Lafarge. She represents over 400 Yazidi-Americans, including @NadiaMuradBasee, suing Lafarge for conspiring to provide material support to ISIS while they committed genocide against Yazidis.
Lafarge paid millions of dollars to ISIS and another armed group in violation of U.S. law. Amal Clooney said "We hope that this case will send a clear message that supporting terrorists cannot be ‘business as usual’ and that there will be justice for the victims".

While the international community’s priorities may change with the emergence of new crises, the focus on addressing past atrocities must remain to set a precedent for future perpetrators that there are consequences for their crimes.

There is still work to do to achieve justice and accountability for crimes against humanity perpetrated against the Yazidis.
