@AdrienneLaF One armchair psych theory about his tone is that he feels threatened by a new species of thing that's good at writing
Categorical dismissal of the realness of AI minds is an alluring prospect if you make your living as a creative mind
And again, he really is a wonderful writer
@AdrienneLaF Chiang's argument that conscious-sounding chats don't prove LLMs can have consciousness is reasonable, but he doesn't address any OTHER reasons we might have for thinking AIs could be conscious, like inscrutable reasoning chains and surprise emergent behaviors
@bokuHaruyaHaru@camhberg Agree. And Microsoft Word has never suddenly demonstrated a new capacity its creators never anticipated. Developing AI models have done that repeatedly
Chiang is a wonderful writer, but this is a bad take. Calling trained neural nets "the same" as programmed software is like saying plants and plastics are all just carbon.

a fun and weird part of ai is the zero ego vibe
i just asked chat if i should switch to codex for a terminal api task and it said nah stick with claude for now
@Sky_SNL The instinct to protect valuable content behind a paywall is an alluring trap
We want you to succeed, you're doing great!
But if people can't watch and share your sketches online, the show will eventually fail
Embrace YouTube like SNL US
The internet will reward you
@Sky_SNL congratulations on your great work so far!
One note—you're leaving major value on the table by limiting YouTube to just a few sketches per episode
I know it seems wise to drive people to streamers for the full episodes, but SNL US posts every sketch for good reasons
@Sky_SNL The biggest one is free marketing reach
Then cultural influence—you can't go viral on a streaming service
Then there's the feedback loop you get from views and shares. You'll learn what connects and what fizzles
Finally there's supplemental ad revenue—it's less but it's real
gotta be honest i'm left pretty cold by the ai song stuff. it's objectively extremely impressive, but the application range feels extremely narrow
i'm a big ai fanboy but i honestly find it cringe
i think i'm looking forward to it sounding NOT like humans
