New statue of Scanderbeg was erected in Sicily in 2024. Sculptor: Gëzim Muriqi.
After the Turks suffered defeat after defeat to the great hero, they sued for peace. Scanderbeg declined. In a letter to the Turkish emissary he wrote:
“Let Mahomet as long as he will seek for peace; as for us, we will purchase our quietness by the sword, and having one gotten and attained it, we will by the sword likewise seek to maintain it … For my part I am your enemy, even by birth and by nativity, and the enmity which I bear you is hereditary. My desire is not so much to get me honor and reputation upon you, as to seek the just deserved revenge of the blood of my friends which you have shed, and of the bondage both of myself and my people the Albanians; and I am fully resolved never to make an end of these my travels, till such time as I have either restored my citizens to their ancient estate, or rendered this my life onto you, to whom it is so hateful.”

Henri Gissey, Louis XIV as Apollo, 1653. Pen, wash and gouache on paper, 167 × 260 mm. Collection: Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF), Paris.
The sheet records a teenage Louis XIV costumed as the sun god—an icon that would soon shape his public image. The drawing belongs to the political world of the Ballet Royal de la Nuit, first performed at the Salle du Petit‑Bourbon on 23 February 1653. Structured as four “watches” of the night that ran until sunrise, the production lasted around thirteen hours and comprised some forty‑five entrées; Louis appeared at daybreak as Apollo.
Why Apollo? In early 1653 France was emerging from the Fronde, and the young king needed a public language of order. What better role than the bringer of light who ends the terrors of the night? Contemporary and later commentators made the connection explicit: Louis’s appearance as the Rising Sun in the 1653 ballet became a cornerstone of his “Roi‑Soleil” persona and served as a preview of the cultural politics that would define his long reign.
The baller‑king’s passion for dance had lasting institutional effects. Louis performed leading roles until around age thirty and, once he began ruling personally, established a royal academy of dance, laying groundwork for the Paris Opéra. The Apollo guise did not remain confined to the stage: it migrated into the sculptural and garden programs at Versailles, where the monarch’s solar identity governed the arts of state.
