A stronger Catholic identity is needed, one that gives colleges clearer direction and purpose as all of higher education changes, one that is more than just ROI.
These are tough times for Catholic colleges and universities. A commitment to educating the whole person remains the best path forward.
The latest from @HeidiSchlumpf:

@HeidiSchlumpf Funny timing highlight the ROI issue. And, even funnier, they write, "'One of the basic tenets of economics is that money is not all that matters'" and then go on to talk about happiness. 🙄
New essay in @commonwealmag by the excellent @HeidiSchlumpf on my Holistic Impact Report and the future of Catholic higher education. It pushes for meaning, purpose, ethics, and community as central to Catholic identity. @StMarysU leads the way on this kind of work.
A more holistic alternative to the Cardinal Newman Society-style of Catholic identity for colleges and universities. My piece, based on the research of Jason King. @kingjasone

Nice to be quoted in this story: "God’s love for people and God’s call to love others resonates especially with students who are looking for meaning in life while also experiencing a sense of loneliness."
College campuses are seeing a surge in students seeking Confirmation this year—many confirmed at this year's Easter Vigil. Their stories differ, but the common thread is joy, purpose, and a search for something more:

ChatGPT euphemism of the day: "I’m generating likely explanations unless I force myself into a verifiable compute pathway." I make stuff up unless you tell me not to. 🤣
Honored to give the 2026 Bernadette O’Connor Lecture at @UIWLATAM this week. The question: Does Catholic education make a difference? The answer, from national data and graduate stories, it shapes meaning, ethics, community, work, and even how students approach AI.
Nice to see my op/ed out!
If you only focus on financial outcomes (which are real and important), you miss all the things colleges do for students, including those who don't come from the upper class.
I really liked this thought piece by @MichaelSWinters. It avoided "whose side is he on" framing, reflecting more on the transition from Pope Francis to Pope Leo XIV: "A successor, not a replacement." https://t.co/3QZi04wvU8 via @NCRonline
My new op-ed just came out in the San Antonio Express-News: “Reconciliation begins where we serve together.” It's on Pope Leo XIV "On Love of the Poor", on how love can break down walls and brings people together.

today "Vatican News" in Vietnamese talks about my 2024 book with Orbis Books @OrbisBooks and Jason King's @kingjasone essay on theology and Catholic higher education

Proud to share findings from a new study I worked on with @stmaryslawscho1 and @StMarysLawDean: Catholic law grads outpace secular peers in law practice, values alignment, ethical reasoning & civic life.

@MassimoFaggioli@ChurchLifeND@americamag I enjoyed the book quite a bit, especially the market vs. the church analysis. I wasn't trying to criticize guild theologians. We all do this work, and it is good. It is just not all of what we do, and it isn't helpful for undergraduates in core classes.
Glad to see my new post in @ChurchLifeND. It goes with my reflections in @americamag last month. Both are trying to think through the future of theology amidst the changes in Catholic higher education.
Catholic higher education must prioritize core theology—a theology aimed directly at the formation of students: at their search for meaning, their understanding of the Catholic tradition, and their engagement with the world.
